The incumbent will be responsible for the management of all surgical aspects of renal transplant and associated surgeries. He/ she will work in close collaboration with the Medical Director and other personnel to develop all aspects of Kidney transplantation.

The incumbent will be responsible for the management of all surgical aspects of renal transplant and associated surgeries. He/ she will work in close collaboration with the Medical Director and other personnel to develop all aspects of Kidney transplantation. He/ she will be responsible for achieving the goals of the Unit which is to ensure at least 24 renal transplants annually for the first 2 years and an increase of twenty percent (20%) annually     thereafter.

 Main Responsibilities:

  • Surgical pre-assessment of all patients to be transplanted, both recipients and living donors
  • Review of documents sent by donor hospital teams on potential deceased donors to assess their suitability to become actual deceased donors
  • Performance as surgical lead and assistance with all organ retrievals, both from living and deceased donors, and for all organ implantations
  • Collaborative assistance to the Transplant Nephrologist for in-hospital peri- operative care  and post- transplant care of all transplant recipients and all living donors
  • Collaboration with the Medical Director and Transplant Nephrologist to determine transplant schedules for the Unit.
  • Liaison with other departments e.g. Pharmacy, Laboratory, Cardiology, and Radiology to ensure that appropriate staff, reagents and consumables are in place in order that Kidney transplants can be performed at all times and to make the relevant notification and application to his/ her Medical Director if shortcomings/deficiencies are noted.
  • Collaboration with Medical Director in arranging the schedule of visiting transplant teams
  • Liaison between the Unit, Referral Institutions and relevant support groups e.g. the Kidney Recipients Support Group of Trinidad and Tobago, and other stakeholders and community groups to promote Organ Donation and Transplantation.
  • Promotion of public educational outreach programs on Deceased and Living organ and tissue donation.
  • Active participation in morbidity and mortality meetings
  • Active participation in audits of the Unit annually as well as quality improvement projects
  • Participation in Selection and Donor Traceability Committee
  • Conduct of long- term surgical biovigilance of recipients and living donors
  • Collaboration with Medical Director for annual budget preparations
  • Ability to work harmoniously with colleagues, both internal and from multiple disciplines
  • Effective communication and leadership skills
  • Active contribution to improving the transplant surgical skills of members and potential members of the transplant team
  • Identification of areas requiring surgical improvement and facilitation of same
  • Timely preparation of comprehensive surgical reports
  • Timely regular requisition of transplant surgical equipment and supplies in order to maintain at all times a minimum order quantity
  • Performance of vascular access surgery and operations related to the complications of  End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).

Minimum Requirements and Experience:

  • Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of Organ Donation and Transplantation
  • FRCS, DM Surgery or equivalent Diploma recognized by the Medical Board of Trinidad and Tobago.
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in General Surgery and/or significant experience in Vascular Surgery, Transplantation and Urology as evidenced by certification or verification of being in a transplant training program such as a one (1) year formal Transplant Fellowship training and at least three (3) years of continuous experience performing Transplant and Access Surgery

OR

  • Evidence of completion of a minimum of one year in a transplant training program in a formal Transplant Fellowship with two (2) years of experience performing kidney transplants

OR

  • Formal training in transplantation, four (4) years of continuous experience performing Transplant and Access Surgery.
  • Current registration with the Medical Board of Trinidad and Tobago.

 *Certificates acquired at foreign universities MUST be supported by certified transcripts as well as evidence that the completed programme is accredited in Trinidad and Tobago.*
