POSITION TITLE:

Quarry Manager

(Contract Position)

POSITION GRADE:

Grade 4

DEPARTMENT:

Projects and Quarry

REPORTS TO (JOB TITLE):

A. POSITION PURPOSE:

The Quarry Manager is responsible for properly supervising the day-to-day onsite Quarrying operations, all Quarry staff (Quarry Sales Clerk and Checker), third party contractors and relating directly to Quarry Customers to ensure operations are conducted safely, efficiently and in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations with emphasis on Quarry Customer Satisfaction and creation of customer loyalty.

 

B. MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Operational Management and Supervision

 

  • Oversees the mining activities at the sandpit in a safe and productive manner to achieve production goals consistent with quality and environmental requirements.
  • Assures deliveries are made in a safe manner, on time, and meet quality and environmental requirements. Specific activities include:
    • Mine excavation, haulage, product load-out, handling waste
    • Sandpit maintenance
    • Executes directives and plans assigned by the Projects and Quarry Manager.
    • Supervises assigned personnel which includes handling and resolving daily issues, concerns, grievances, monitoring their job performance and attendance.
    • Monitors and reviews production programs and progress against set targets to ensure on-time delivery.
    • Maintains and provides efficient stock-pile to supply customers’ requirements.
    • Closely monitors all areas, including administrative functions, of the quarry to ensure safe and effective operations.
    • Oversees the work of the contractors and ensures that their operations are executed in line with relevant legislation and regulations.

 

Compliance and Safety

  • Keeps up to date with relevant government legislation and industry developments relevant to quarry operations.
  • Collaborates with the EHS Representatives to identify and report on all actual and potential hazards within the quarry, taking reasonable steps to implement procedures to eliminate or mitigate the hazard(s).
  • Implements safe operating policies and procedures.
  • Reinforces all rehabilitation initiatives.
  • Provides input into the preparation of EHS plans for the sandpit.

 

Reporting and Improvement

  • Prepares regular reports; daily, monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.
  • Conducts random audits on various aspects of the operations to ensure the integrity of the personnel and processes.
  • Reviews the operations processes and makes recommendations for improvement.

D. QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, BEHAVIOURAL AND TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:                                                           

Qualifications: Minimum

  • Bachelor’s Degree in the disciplines of Engineering, Sciences, Geology or a field related to any extractive industries.
  • Training and/or professional qualifications in Quarry Management, OSH, Geoscience, Project Management or operations in any extractive industries.

Experience: Desired

  • Five (5) to eight (8) years’ quarry management experience.
  • Experience in directing a multi-disciplinary team and assisting in managing medium/large scale Projects will be an asset.
  • Experience in Public Sector/State Enterprise will be considered an asset.

Behavioural Competencies: Desired

  • High degree of integrity and trustworthy.

  • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Technical Competencies: Desired

  • Knowledge of mining operations, construction and civil engineering.
  • Sound knowledge of Environmental, Health and Safety laws and regulations governing the quarry environment.
  • Computer literate with proficiency in the use of the Microsoft Office Suite.
