Salary Range/Compensation Package (gross monthly base of $20,000.00; no other allowances)
Days and Hours of Work: Monday to Friday; generally 8am to 430pm
Permanent after 6 month probation

Job Summary

Provides leadership in the effective administration of the various Human Resource (HR) and Industrial Relations (IR) functions within the context of achieving the Company’s objectives. Uses initiative and independent judgment within defined areas of authority and Company policies and procedures in order to plan, direct, and coordinate human resource management activities of the organization. Also required to provide leadership, consultation and operational support to the Executive team and Line Managers on strategic and people related matters.

Job Responsibilities

  • Manages the Company’s staff compliment, subject to the Company’s objectives, policies, regulations and guidelines to ensure optimal staffing, efficient manpower planning and timely filling of vacancies.
  • Formulates and makes recommendations for changes to rules, regulations and HR Policies and procedures and ensures employee compliance with same.
  • Supports the Compensation Committee in conducting salary review exercises in accordance with the Company’s established compensation review system and scoring criteria.
  • Ensures that the Company’s Performance Management System is administered in an efficient manner and performance appraisals are completed according to established procedures.
  • Assists in the identification, preparation, coordination and implementation of employee training.
  • Administers and oversees systems and procedures relative to recruitment, selection and orientation of employees which includes creating and posting of vacancies online, in the newspapers, engaging recruitment agencies and other providers, shortlisting suitable applicants, conducting interviews and reference checks, preparing and making offers.
  • Oversees and assists in the design, documentation and review/updating of Job Descriptions.
  • Prepares monthly HR and IR Reports, HR weekly Investigative Reports and other reports as required.
  • Conducts Exit Interviews to identify reasons for employee separation as required.
  • Coordinates the Company’s annual Food Badge Exercise and Medical Examinations for all Operations employees.
  • Manages and stores all employee information in a confidential manner.
  • Ensures that there is regular and ongoing recruitment of Casuals for the Production, Fruit Area and Warehousing Departments.
  • Prepares all HR and IR correspondence in a timely manner which includes job letters, employment contracts, permanent offer letters, internal memos to staff, letters of extension, confirmation letters, disciplinary letters, all documents with respect to negotiations, proposals, Collective Agreements, Memorandum of Agreed Items, Minutes, correspondence to the Union, Ministry of Labour, Registration Recognition and Certificate Board and the Industrial Court.
  • Ensures that the above correspondence are copied, faxed, filed and delivered to the relevant parties.
  • Maintains a progressive and harmonious Industrial Relations climate within the Company.
  • Represents the Company as a member of the Negotiating Team in meetings with the Recognised Majority Union and participates in the management and enforcement of Collective Agreements and all related matters.
  • Recommends changes to the Collective Agreements; arranges and participates in meetings and negotiations for same.
  • Takes disciplinary action as required in keeping with established procedures, Collective Agreements and good Industrial Relations practices.
  • Promotes proper Health and Safety practices as part of the Health and Safety Committee.
  • Assists with the investigation of accidents and arrangements for ensuring that injured workers are transported to the Company’s doctor or health facility as requested.
  • Performs the functions of the Assembly Coordinator on the Crisis Management Team in the event of an emergency.
  • Assists Managers in monitoring absenteeism, leave forms and leave utilization and in ensuring adherence to leave application procedures and Company policies and takes appropriate disciplinary action where necessary.
  • Provides information required for HR and IR decision making in a complete, accurate and timely manner and offers advice and guidance on Industrial Relations matters.
  • Provides support to Managers in addressing Non-Conformances, disciplinary matters and grievances in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Addresses employee complaints, assists in resolving disputes, grievances and conflicts.
  • Performs any other related duties as may be required by the function

Job Requirements

  • B.A. Human Resource Management or B.Sc. Business Management with specialisation in Human Resources.
  • A Master’s Degree will be considered an asset.
  • Any suitable combination of qualifications, training and experience.
  • Experience in a Food Manufacturing environment will be an asset.
  • At least seven (7) years in a similar position at a managerial level.
  • At least three (3) years direct Industrial Relations experience, including having worked in a unionized environment.
  • Must be computer literate and proficient in Microsoft Office.

  • Excellent leadership, communication, organizational, interpersonal and time management skills
  • Ability to negotiate, resolve conflict and exercise sound judgement and initiative.
