HSE Specialist - Environmental

MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB:

This role will have a specific focus on the planning, coordination, implementation and monitoring of the Group’s Environmental Management System with support rendered to the Group’s management of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) risks. Effectively execute the day-to-day operations of Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) function and actively contribute to the planning and implementation of HSSE management initiatives/programs to promote a positive HSE culture for the Group.

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Fulfill the role of Lead Auditor and programme coordinator for the Group’s ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS) certification. This involves planning, coordinating and supporting the Group’s internal and external audit programme.
  • Ensure that the processes required for the EMS are established, implemented, maintained and updated as required.
  • Support the Management Team in the data-driven determination and coordination of environmental performance objectives that are required to effectively address Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) risks.
  • Determine and coordinate with the Management Team the work required for fulfillment of the EMS requirements.
  • Support the Management Team in compiling and reporting on relevant information required for input into the Group’s Management Review programme associated with the EMS.
  • Develop, implement and review respective environmental assessments and management action plans for the Group.
  • Monitor and evaluate applicable regulatory or voluntary HSE compliance obligations to support the Management team in maintaining and/ or achieving compliance. This includes existing, new, updated and/ or emerging legislation.
  • Facilitate the development and submission of environmental and regulatory applications.
  • Facilitate the review of the Group’s environmental aspects and impacts assessments associated with routine and non-routine activities (e.g. projects).
  • Provide support to determine and resolve root cause(s) associated with environmental aspects.
  • Support the Group’s management of contractors through HSE-related contractor reviews.
  • Support the Group’s onboarding programme through the execution of FSEHSQ orientation.
  • Maintains the Group’s HSE Performance Management Platform and prepare applicable HSE reports as deemed necessary.
  • Supports effective document management and control of related HSE Policies, procedure and systems
  • Assist in compliance reviews of General Risk Assessments (GRAs), Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and other subject-matter specific HSSE related assessments.
  • Provides advisory services to the HSE Committee.
  • Coordinates and supports the execution of scheduled HSE drills and other related exercises.
  • Coordinates and supports the inspection and maintenance of HSE equipment such as firefighting/detection, spill response equipment, etc.
  • Develop and deliver training programs in a manner that promotes employee’s awareness and a positive HSE culture.
  • Develop and administer workplace HSE initiatives and lead continuous improvement efforts.
  • Ensures inspections and audits are completed as necessary (daily, weekly, monthly and annual) to comply with Group and local regulations.
  • Conduct regular unannounced walkthroughs of work areas and talk with personnel to identify their concerns. Communicate HSE issues to workers in a manner that helps them understand why they are important and addressing them is for their benefit.
  • Support the management of facility workplace incident investigations to include responding to and reporting all incidents, incident investigations, determine root cause, establishing recurrence prevention plans, and follow through. This includes regulatory reporting to Government agencies as required.
  • Assist in emergency response and provide first aid guidance.
  • Keep updated of local and international best practices that may improve the Group’s management of HSE-related risks.
  • Perform other work-related tasks as assigned.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS/ EXPERIENCE/ KNOWLEDGE/ SKILLS/ ABILITIES:

  • BSc. preferably in the field of Health, Safety and Environment or in a Natural Science Discipline.
  • Occupational Health and Safety Certification (preferably NEBOSH)
  • Demonstrated competency in the implementation and auditing of ISO systems (preferably 14001, 9001, 45001 & 31000)
  • Demonstrated knowledge in the United Nations in Sustainable Development Goals (SGS’s) and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) frameworks.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with local and international HSE regulations and best management practices will be required.
  • Training and familiarity with root cause analysis will be an asset.
  • Training in Project Management will be an asset.
  • 3+ Years’ experience (preferably in a food manufacturing environment).   
  • Ability to work individually and as well as in a team.
  • Good Team Leadership and Communication Skills. 
  • Report Writing, data management, statistical analysis and use of applicable software.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office 360 and other Microsoft applications (word, excel, power point, access, outlook, publisher, etc.).
  • Sound presentation skills and use of multimedia equipment.
  • Time Management to handle multiple tasks.
