Protection Officer, Bank of Jamaica

Applications are invited from suitably qualified professionals to resource the position of Protection Officer, Protective Services Department, Facilities Management and Protective Services Division. 

Reporting to the Shift Commander, the successful candidate will be responsible for: 

  1. Executing security measures at the Bank’s main entrance, metal detector, scanner, information and registration desk, Bullion, Currency department’s entrance and man trap, East Street security post, and the East and West gates to ensure that access through the respective areas are in accordance with the established policies and procedures.
  2. Managing the use of the Close Circuit Television (CCTV); Fire and Life Safety; and other electronic security systems thereby ensuring proper protection, surveillance, recording and monitoring of activities at points covered inclusive of Bank’s perimeter, External (UDC) car park, Pension Fund building and high security internal operations.
  3. Securing firearms, ammunition and other offensive weapons in the designated gun ports and other storage areas for licensed firearm holders and other carriers who are permitted access to the Bank’s buildings.
  4. Ensuring that the movements of cash between the Cash Processing center and the Currency vaults; as well as bullion operations are conducted in accordance with the standard operating procedures of the Protective Services and Currency Departments.
  5. Providing security escort services to the Bank’s Senior Executives and other members of staff travelling between home and the airport during early mornings and/or late at nights; as well as to members of the Currency department undertaking pre-clearance activities at the wharves.
  6. Participating in Special Security Operations conducted in collaboration with the JDF, the JCF or contract security outfits thereby ensuring the safe and secure conveyance of currency between the wharves and the Bank’s main building.
  7. Ensuring that the respective Security Logs, Daily Occurrence Books, Visitor Registration system (VRS) and other records accurately and comprehensively reflect the activities occurring at the respective security points.
  8. Preparing and submitting through the Shift Commander(s) to the Operations Manager, reports on incidents occurring at assigned posts to complete the Bank’s records and or to facilitate investigations.
  9. Participating in the management of the evacuation of the Bank’s buildings in the event of threats resulting from man-made or natural disasters e.g. terrorist activities, fires, hurricanes, etc.
  10. Conducting scheduled and ad hoc patrol tours of the internal and external areas of the main building during regular working and closed hours, as well as night patrols for the external properties.   
  11. Performing any other duties consistent with the nature and function of the job. 

QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Criminology/Psychology/Sociology or equivalent plus one (1) year relevant experience.

                                                                    OR 

  • Diploma in Criminology/Psychology/Sociology or equivalent plus three (3) years of relevant working experience.

                                                                    OR

  • Certificate in Criminology//Psychology/Sociology or equivalent plus four (4) years of relevant working experience.

                                                                    OR

  • Minimum of five (5) passes, including English Language, in the G.C.E. or C.X.C. examinations or the equivalent with five (5) years relevant working experience,

SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Be sensitive to the nuances of personalities while insisting on the adherence to the Bank’s security operations and standards.
  • Keep abreast of modern security trends and developments in Security Management and their likely impact on the Bank’s security.
  • Ensure the effective and efficient delivery of services by monitoring and carrying out a variety and multiplicity of tasks.
  • Conduct searches of vehicles and suspected persons on the Bank’s premises.
  • Remain drug free and be subject to psychometric testing semiannually and under special conditions.
  • Restrain and detain persons suspected of criminal activities on the Banks premises.
  • Maintain the minimum range scores set by the Bank of Jamaica in the use of selected weapons.
  • Issue security and safety instructions to the Bank’s staff and visitors when necessary.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Required to be on duty in the face of threats of aggression and/or natural disasters (e.g., bomb threat, civil disobedience, earthquake, and hurricane).
  • Exposure to confidential information pertaining to the security of the Bank and the Bank’s operations.
  • ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​A fair amount of driving, walking, standing and lifting is required to carry out the day- to- day functions of the job.
  • Must be physically fit and at all times maintain the minimum level of fitness established by the Bank for this category of worker.
  • Subject to testing for prohibited substances
  • Extended working hours carried out on shifts to include 12 hours on weekends, public holidays and special occasions seven days per week.
  • Aspects of the job are carried out under conditions less than the standard modern office environment.
  • Required to display a high level of integrity and professionalism.
