The Underwriter is responsible for proper risk assessment to determine acceptance of applications, writing new insurance business, renewing business, preparing policies and supporting the Underwriting function. •

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Technical:

  • Appropriately evaluates and assess risks and decides whether risk should be accepted or shared with facultativor a re-insurer.
  • Negotiates terms with policyholders and/or intermediaries and specifies conditions to be insured.
  • Provides, follows up and acts upon quotations for new business.
  • Processes and follows-up on renewals to achieve retention target.
  •  Enters endorsement information according to underwriting standards and limits of authority.
  •  Verifies information and produces policy documents and certificates.
  •  Verifies and validates Bordereaux from Agents/Brokers to ensure proper documentation and risk assessment.
  •  Provides and processes data for analytical reports.
  •  Advises Brokers, Agents and other intermediaries to ensure compliance. 
  •  Provides technical support and guidance to branch employees as required. 

Operations:

  •  Provides first line supervision on a daily basis to branch employees, liaising accordingly with the Underwriting Supervisor as required.
  • Ensures that branch surroundings, work spaces and all facilities are consistent with the company’s brand image and in keeping with HSE standards.
  • Responsible for securing the company’s assets at the various branches ensuring that a risk management approach is adopted to minimize and mitigate risks. This includes ensuring the security of employees.
  • Responsible for all branch administrations including effective resource allocation.
  • Maintains hard copy and electronic filing systems to facilitate easy retrieval and proper record keeping in accordance with the company’s standards and requirements.
  •  Reviews all policy files, prepares Compliance Check List, sends out letters and follow-ups for documentation.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Minimum 5 CXC passes including English and Mathematics
  • Diploma in Insurance
  • Five (5) years experience in an insurance environment with at least 1 year in a similar role
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
