Prep Chef

Join the culinary team at Press Cafe/Bistro, Kingston as a Prep Chef! In this essential role, you'll support the kitchen's smooth operation by preparing ingredients and assisting with various tasks. From chopping vegetables to preparing sauces, you'll ensure our kitchen remains organized, efficient, and safe. Working alongside line cooks, baristas, and executive chefs, you'll help create delicious dishes and contribute to an exceptional dining experience for our guests. Attention to food safety, consistency, and collaboration is key in this dynamic role.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain an up-to-date Food Handler’s Permit and adhere to all food and kitchen safety protocols.
  • Follow the prep list and kitchen instructions set by chefs and baristas.
  • Label, stock, and organize ingredients for easy access.
  • Measure and portion ingredients, including seasoning and preparing meats.
  • Wash, chop, and prepare vegetables and other ingredients for meal preparation.
  • Set up workstations to ensure timely and efficient cooking.
  • Perform basic cooking duties, such as preparing sauces, soups, salads, and simple entrees.
  • Assist with meal preparation for customers as needed.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workstation and contribute to the overall cleanliness of the kitchen.
  • Ensure proper storage of food and compliance with nutrition and sanitation guidelines.
  • Perform additional kitchen duties as assigned by the supervisor or team lead.

Job Requirements:

  • Experience: Prior kitchen or food preparation experience preferred, but not required.
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent; culinary certifications are a plus.
  • Knife Skills: Proficiency in handling knives and kitchen tools safely for chopping, slicing, and dicing.
  • Food Safety Knowledge: Strong understanding of food handling and sanitation practices (food handler certification required).
  • Attention to Detail: Ability to follow recipes, portion sizes, and instructions accurately.
  • Time Management: Capable of working efficiently in a fast-paced kitchen environment.
  • Teamwork: Strong communication skills and collaboration with kitchen staff and servers.
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to stand for long periods, lift up to 50 lbs, and work in a hot, fast-paced environment.
  • Adaptability: Flexibility to handle diverse kitchen tasks and adjust to the needs of the kitchen.
  • Basic Culinary Skills: Familiarity with ingredients, cooking techniques, and kitchen procedures.
