JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Perfusionist
SALARY SCALE: Z10-6 Barbados Dollars
DEPARTMENT: Cardiovascular Services
REPORTS TO: Senior Perfusionist


JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision, is responsible for managing and operating extracorporeal circulation equipment during cardiac surgeries and other procedures that require mechanical support of the heart and lungs. This role involves critical decision-making and precise technical skills to ensure patient safety and optimal outcomes during surgical interventions. Undertakes any other related duties as assigned by management.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties listed below are intended only as an illustration of the various types of work that may be performed:

  1. Sets up and operates heart-lung machines and other extracorporeal devices used for cardiopulmonary bypass, including pumps, oxygenators, and filters;
  2. Continuously monitors and adjusts physiological parameters such as blood flow, temperature, and gas exchange to maintain appropriate patient hemodynamics and oxygenation;
  3. Reviews patient history and surgical plans to prepare for specific perfusion needs and ensure appropriate equipment and procedures are in place;
  4. Prepares and tests all necessary equipment and supplies before the surgical procedure begins;
  5. Operates and troubleshoots perfusion equipment during surgery, making real-time adjustments to address changes in patient condition;
  6. Works closely with the surgical team, including surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nurses, to provide integrated care and respond to any intraoperative issues;
  7. Monitors patient vital signs, blood gases, and other relevant metrics to ensure stability and effective support throughout the procedure;
  8. Responds to emergencies or complications related to perfusion or equipment malfunctions;
  9. Properly shuts down and clean perfusion equipment after the procedure, ensuring all protocols for decontamination and maintenance are followed;
  10. Maintains accurate records of perfusion parameters, equipment use, and patient responses for each surgical procedure;
  11. Ensures that all procedures and practices comply with hospital policies, industry standards, and regulatory requirements;
  12. Participates in quality improvement initiatives and ongoing education to stay current with advancements in perfusion technology and techniques;
  13. Provides education and training to surgical staff, and other healthcare professionals on perfusion practices and equipment usage;
  14. Engages in continuing education to maintain certification and stay updated on best practices and technological advancements in the field;
  15. Observes health and safety precautions in the execution of duties;
  16. Uses customer service skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, staff and members of the public;
  17. Performs any other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  1. Advanced knowledge of extracorporeal circulation techniques, equipment operation, and troubleshooting.
  2. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to make quick and effective decisions during surgery.
  3. Excellent communication and teamwork skills to coordinate with the surgical team and address any issues that arise.
  4. High level of accuracy and attention to detail in monitoring patient status and equipment performance.
  5. Highly developed verbal and written communication skills to communicate with patients about sensitive topics and to explain complex medical and scientific concepts in a manner that is easy to understand.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  1. A certificate in Perfusion Technology from an accredited school or programme in Perfusion Technology, or
  2. Perfusion certification of the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion or equivalent.
