VACANCY

 

Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons to fill the following position at the North-Central Regional Health Authority (NCRHA).

                                                                                

ORTHOPAEDIC PLASTER TECHNICIAN

 

Responsible for providing assistance to the healthcare team through applications, adjustments and removal of a variety of casts, splints and traction fittings. Also, to provide assistance to the Orthopaedic Surgeons in the surgical room, clinic and wards. 

Main Responsibilities: 

  • Performs the technical skill of treating patients with broken bones, soft tissue injuries and burns.
  • Educates patients on the importance of compliance with treatment procedures, understanding warning signs and self-care practices to maximize optimum care.
  • Immobilizes fractures to any part (bone) of the human frame in the correct position and other treatments related to orthopaedic injuries.
  • Applies and replaces plaster of paris and scotch casts - minerva jacket (cervical injuries), hip spica (fractures of the femur), body jacket (fracture of the lumber sacral spine), and long leg (fractures of the tibia and fibula bones), above elbow (fractures of the radius and ulna) and U plaster (fractures of the shaft of the humerus).
  • Applies emergency removal of any other types of removable splints.
  • Applies all types of slab utilized for soft tissue injuries and burns.
  • Reinforces all types of plaster casts and traction splints.
  • Cuts windows in plaster casts for inspection of wounds, sores or operation sites.
  • Applies plaster cast for the prevention and correction of deformities of congenital talipes equinovarus (CTEV) and also in the upper and lower limbs of patients.
  • Prepares and positions the patient in the surgical room as requested by the Surgeon.
  • Ensures that the accessories for the operating table are in place for specific procedures.
  • Sanitizes and ensures proper maintenance of all equipment and the area used.
  • Applies and removes tourniquet in the surgical room under the direction of the Surgeon.
  • Installs and removes, balkan frames, leg frames and other related frames.
  • Reports any accidents/incidents, complaints, defects and re-stocking levels of consumables to the organisational relationship.
  • Pads bronze frames to be used for skeletal tractions on the orthopaedic wards.
  • Splint-cut one side of the cast due to an emergency.
  • Cleans the affected areas on patients immediately after plaster casts are applied.
  • Makes soft cervical collars used for cervical injuries.
  • Makes and applies artificial pylons for the stumps of amputated limbs (leg).
  • Erects and maintains the surgical table, and any other related equipment in the operating theatre for various operational techniques.
  • Collaborates with other healthcare professionals, such as medical, nursing and allied staff, as required.
  • Maintains and monitors health and safety issues in the plaster room/surgical rooms.
  • Maintains accurate notes and records.
  • Assists with the transition of patients to specified wards within the Hospital prior to and after the procedures are completed.
  • Perform other related duties as directed by the appropriate organisational relationship.

 Minimum Qualification, Requirements and Experience:

  • Minimum of five (5) O’level passes; two (2) of which must be English Language and Mathematics.
  • Six (6) months training course in the treatment of orthopaedic injuries to patients and application of plaster of paris and scotch cast.
  • Minimum of three (3) years post-qualificaiton experience in a related job function.
  • Certiicate in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

 

* Certificates acquired at foreign universities MUST be supported by certified transcripts as well as evidence that the completed programme is accredited in Trinidad and Tobago. *
