Customs Clerk I

Job Summary

The Customs Clerk I is responsible for clearing and /or shipping of cargo at any port, off- port customs warehouse or airport in Trinidad and Tobago and to handle all matters, queries or processes relative to the clearing and /or shipping of cargo. 

 

Education:

a)     Valid Customs Clerk Grade I License

b)     5 O’Level Passes

 

Experience:

a)Minimum of three years’ work experience in Customs Brokerage services.

 

Other:

a)Must be familiar with all customs and port procedures for the import or export of cargo.

b)Attentive to detail with completeness and accuracy.

c)     Good interpersonal, oral and written communication.

d)     High level of interpersonal skills.

e)     Strong presentation and facilitation.

f)     Team Player with an optimistic work attitude

g)    Able to work independently without supervision.

h)    Capable of multi-tasking.

i)     Maintain detailed and accurate records and reports.

j)     Work well under pressure.

 

 Accountability:

The Customs Clerk I is directly accountable to the Customs Lead or his/her delegate.

 

Functions, Duties and Responsibilites:

Operations

a)     Clear cargo at any time from any port, off-port customs facility or airport in Trinidad and Tobago.

b)     Ship out cargo at any time at any port, off-port customs facility or airport in Trinidad and Tobago.

c)     Accompany cargo at any time to customer’s premises anywhere in Trinidad and Tobago.

d)     Examine cargo at any time for clearance or shipping at company warehouse or at customer’spremisesanywhereinTrinidad and Tobago.

e)     Lodge all documents at any customs office and port office for approvals.

f)     Monitor daily the approval of documents from customs and other agencies by visiting these officesandobtainingtherequisite approvals and stamps.

g)     Visit all government and other agencies for approvals, licenses, permits for all documents as needed.

h)     Pay duties and other charges at any customs or government agency office.

i)      Certify cheques at any financial institution.

j)      Visit customers to collect documents, cheques or other items as required.

k)     Visit any office or financial institution on request of management.

l)      Collect all invoices from truckers, customs, port, airport and carrier’s agent for payment and invoicing.

m)    Issue delivery note to truckers for all cargo cleared and being delivered to customers.

n)     Update shipment files with all clearance or shipping information.

o)     Approve all truckers’ invoices to attest that all jobs on invoice are valid and billed correctly.

p)     Prepare all letters, permits, overtime application or any other document as required.

q)     Collect all delivery Orders from vessel carriers or agent in time for clearing or shipping cargo.

r)     Visit carriers or agents to get sub-delivery bills of lading signed.

s)     Update notice board.

 

Job Demands:

Performance of the required duties will require physical ability to climb permanent and temporary stairs and negotiate work areas as required. The employee is required to be able to regularly lift items up to 10lbs safely and within established guidelines. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
