The Laboratory Manager oversees lab operations, ensuring accurate, timely test results through quality control and instrument maintenance. They supervise staff, implement new techniques, and assist physicians in diagnosis and treatment, ensuring efficiency and precision in laboratory services.

NATURE AND SCOPE:
■ The Laboratory Manager works closely with the staff in the organization concerning the clinical and professional operations of the laboratory.
■ The Laboratory Manager also works closely with the accounts team in relation to the purchasing function to ensure timely delivery of necessary equipment and supplies.
■ The Laboratory Manager instructs staff in proper collection, testing and reporting procedures for specimens and compliance to the established standard operating processes and procedures. The Laboratory Manager participates continuing educational programs and workshops to keep abreast of new techniques and procedures.
■ The Laboratory Manager performs and oversee preventative maintenance and repairs on automated laboratory instruments; studies and periodically uses new instruments and methodology to efficiently function as a floating technologist.
■ The Laboratory Manager develops and manages a program for training and evaluating new and existing laboratory personnel. This position designs jobs and develops a formal organization for those under its direction. This position coordinates the activities of subordinates and attempts to maintain sound working relationships between all subordinates to ensure operational efficiency.
The Laboratory Manager is expected to make decisions in the following areas:
■ Determines the type, quality, and quantity of supplies to be requested for purchase
■ Maintains proper inventory levels of supplies and methods of storage and issue
■ Ensures adequate training and performance of subordinates.
■ The continuing challenges of this position include scheduling and arranging for broad variations in workload; monitoring the accuracy and quality of test results affecting diagnosis; and dealing effectively with the documentation necessary to fulfill requirements of the internal procedure, Government agencies and client requirements.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
■Responsible for ensuring that Lab Medica Services become ISO 15189 accredited by working with the management and relevant personnel in developing a project plan with a set timeline for gaining such accreditation.
■To develop a framework for the laboratory operations so that it follows the practices of a Quality Management System aligned to ISO 15189.
■ Perform and supervise clinical laboratory testing vital to the detection, differential diagnosis
treatment and study of diseases.
■ Organize, schedule, and evaluate laboratory to assure sound management of the day to day operations of the laboratory.
■ Provide direction to Medical Laboratory Technologists, Medical Laboratory Assistants,
Phlebotomists, Administrative Staff, Courier, and Support Staff to assure high quality test results in a timely manner.
■ Maintain adequate supplies to assure availability and freshness when needed for laboratory procedures.
■ Maintain, inspect, perform, and supervise simple adjustments and repairs to laboratory equipment to ensure accuracy of test results.
■ Coordinate and schedule personnel and procedures required to ensure adequate coverage and provide maximum utilization of manpower.
■ Assure compliance with regulatory and accrediting agency specifications to meet national and regional standards.
■ Must be able to respond to emergency situations.
■ The Laboratory Manager may be required to prepare special reports and provide management with needed operational information.
■ Be involved on special projects, when necessary, with regards to the organization's business and scope of works.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Pre-analytical:
■ The proper control of various pre analytical variables is essential in delivering quality results. It is therefore a direct responsibility for the Laboratory Manager to ensure that specimen results are not adversely affected and reported due to the improper control of pre- analytical variables.
The following are kev pre analytical responsibilities:
■ Ensure that all specimens meet the relevant test requirements:
Volume, specimen type, corrects collection tubes and additives, storage, and transport specimen integrity (hemolysis, contamination etc.)
■ Ensure all specimens are properly processed:
Sample accessioning, sorting, centrifugation and separation, labeling, storage.
Analytical:
■ Ensure Completion of all daily /routinely tests within 24 hours of specimens' receipt.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences or its equivalent.
