Job Summary

The company’s heavy-duty mechanics provide preventive and/or corrective maintenance on all assigned vehicles, equipment or machinery. They are required to inspect vehicles, engines and equipment, carry out service procedures, conduct repairs, and maintain a range of heavy-duty equipment. Heavy duty mechanics must demonstrate effective communication with colleagues, supervisors, managers and clients.

Job Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, service and repair various systems that are found on pieces of heavy equipment such as mechanical and computer electronic controls, air brake systems, transmissions, computer controlled automatic and manual transmissions, electric motors and batteries, and pneumatic systems.
  • Inspect buses, trucks, and other heavy equipment and perform trouble shooting and diagnostic inspections.
  • Diagnose faults using computerized testing equipment.
  • Read, study, understand and follow manufacturers’ instructions and guidelines designed to ensure optimum equipment performance.
  • Maintain operational and mechanical safety re: issues associated with heavy duty equipment and machines.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance such as lubricating, oil changes, and failure analysis.
  • Perform routine brake inspections/ adjustments on commercial vehicles.
  • Adjust equipment per manufacturer’s guidelines; replace faulty parts.
  • Repair and/or replace damaged parts.
  • Clean, lubricate, and conduct routine services on heavy-duty vehicles.
  • Clean and/or service any/all machine attachments (e.g. winches, hoists etc.)
  • Conduct vehicle and equipment servicing requirements as per manufacturers and vendors’ instructions and guidelines.
  • Accept and comply with the advice, guidance and instructions of Worksop management and supervisors.
  • Consult with other mechanics and engineers when required.
  • Report damaged or faulty equipment to management.
  • Wear approved protective equipment while on the job.
  • Maintain repair/maintenance records in accordance with company policy.
  • Attend training and practice knowledge of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and all company policies and procedures as they relate to safety practices.
  • Complete, update and/or maintain various reports and monitor Key Performance Indicators.
  • Participate in and support the company’s information systems security policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Proven experience working with heavy duty vehicles and heavy equipment and machinery.
  • Physically fit and be able to troubleshoot issues on various pieces of equipment and heavy-duty machinery.
  • Evidence of specialised training in mechanics, engineering or related technical fields. 
  • Certification as a heavy equipment mechanic would be an asset.
  • Understanding of computer testing technologies.
  • Ability to lift at least fifty pounds.
  • Extensive knowledge of diesel engines and electric vehicles.
  • Ability to work after-hours if required.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
