JOB SUMMARY

Strategic and results-driven leader responsible for the development and execution of comprehensive category strategies to maximize sales, profitability, and market share. Expert in identifying emerging market trends and competitive landscapes to drive innovative product and service introductions.  Proven ability to differentiate brands through strategic planning and ensure customer relevance in evolving markets. Always exploring ways to stay ahead of the competition and to ensure brand relevance to ever changing consumer habits. Developing strategies to further distinguish the business from its major competitors.  Leads a team of Category Managers and fosters strong cross-functional collaboration with Marketing, Merchandising, and Operations to deliver exceptional customer experiences that is the best in the marketplace, while driving business, sales and profitability.  Develops robust supply chain partnerships and optimizes supplier relationships to drive product availability, promotional effectiveness, and inventory efficiency.  In this regard, develop robust supply chain partners to support initiatives. Management of Suppliers to ensure optimization of products, promotions, assortments, fill rates, sell out programs, Inventory Management.  Development of annual Joint Venture plans for all major suppliers.  

JOB DUTIES

Category Strategy Development:

  • Develop and execute category strategies aligned with the company's overarching business objectives.
  • Conduct comprehensive market analysis, including competitor benchmarking, consumer trend evaluation, and sales data analysis, to identify growth opportunities.
  • Define category roles, set strategic goals, and establish key performance indicators (KPIs) to drive measurable success. 

Assortment Optimization:

  • Lead the selection and curation of product assortments to align with customer needs and maximize profitability.
  • Ensure a balanced mix of products across categories, including private label and national brands, to enhance market positioning.
  • Monitor inventory levels and collaborate with the supply chain team to maintain optimal stock availability and minimize stockouts or overstock situations.
  • Robust inventory management of existing portfolio and new item introductions through the management of inventory turns and new product performance to ensure optimum stock levels are maintained at all times reducing both SLOBs and stock outs and keeping the vendors abreast & engaged where necessary. 

 Pricing and Promotions:

  • Develop data-driven pricing strategies to stay competitive while maintaining healthy profit margins.
  • Plan and execute targeted promotional campaigns to drive customer traffic, boost sales, and enhance brand visibility.
  • Continuously analyze the effectiveness of pricing and promotions, leveraging insights to refine strategies and maximize ROI. 

Vendor Management:

  • Build and maintain strong, strategic relationships with key suppliers and vendors.
  • Negotiate favorable terms, pricing, and promotional support to align with business objectives and drive profitability.
  • Collaborate with vendors to develop innovative products and exclusive offerings, enhancing the company’s competitive edge.

Team Leadership:

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of Category Managers to drive business success.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement to enhance team efficiency and innovation
  • Set clear objectives, provide regular feedback, and ensure alignment with company goals to maximize performance and professional growth. 

Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Partner with Merchandising, Marketing, Warehouse and Store Operations to ensure seamless execution of category strategies.
  • Work closely with Marketing to develop and implement customer-centric campaigns and initiatives that drive engagement and sales.
  • Collaborate with Finance to manage budgets effectively and ensure profitability targets are consistently met. 

Performance Analysis:

  • Continuously monitor and analyze category performance, including sales trends, profit margins, and market share.
  • Leverage data-driven insights to identify opportunities for optimization, growth, and strategic improvements.
  • Prepare and present regular performance reports to senior leadership, providing actionable recommendations and progress updates on key initiatives. 

Purchasing

  • Develop and execute a strategic purchasing plan that prioritizes cost-effective spending, value-driven procurement, and demand forecasting.
  • Optimize purchasing decisions, particularly for foreign currency transactions, to ensure financial efficiency and cost control.
  • Align procurement strategies with business objectives to enhance operational efficiency and profitability.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, Marketing, or a related field; MBA preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in retail category management, merchandising, or a related field.
  • Proven track record of driving sales and profitability through effective category management
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and make informed decisions.
  • Excellent negotiation and vendor management skills.
  • Exceptional leadership and team management abilities.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency in retail analytics tools and software (e.g., SAP, Nielsen, IRI).
  • Deep understanding of consumer behavior and retail trends.
