Job Summary:

An Auto Technician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining various mechanical and electrical systems in automobiles. This includes engine, transmission, suspension, brake, and exhaust systems, as well as electronic components like lighting, entertainment systems, and computerized controls. The role involves troubleshooting vehicle problems, performing routine maintenance, and ensuring vehicles operate safely and efficiently. Auto Technicians work with a wide range of vehicles, including cars, trucks, and SUVs, and often use advanced diagnostic tools and equipment.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Vehicle Inspection & Diagnosis:

   • Perform thorough inspections to identify mechanical and electrical problems in vehicles.
   • Use diagnostic tools, scanners, and software to pinpoint issues with various systems.
   • Conduct test drives to replicate and identify performance issues.

2. Repairs & Replacements:

   • Perform engine and transmission repairs or replacements, addressing issues like overheating, poor performance, or leaks.
   • Replace or repair faulty parts such as timing belts, alternators, water pumps, and other essential components.
   • Fix brake systems, including brake pads, calipers, and rotors, to ensure proper stopping power.
   • Repair steering and suspension systems, ensuring proper alignment and handling.

3. Maintenance Services:

   • Perform routine maintenance tasks, such as oil changes, tire rotations, and fluid checks.
   • Replace filters, including air, oil, and fuel filters, to keep systems clean and running smoothly.
   • Inspect and service batteries, charging systems, and electrical connections.

4. Electrical & Computer Systems:

   • Diagnose and repair electrical issues such as faulty wiring, lighting, or control systems.
   • Work on computerized systems, including engine control modules (ECM) and anti-lock brake systems (ABS).
   • Install and repair vehicle accessories like air conditioning, infotainment systems, and navigation units.

5. Safety Inspections & Compliance:

   • Conduct safety inspections to ensure vehicles meet local and federal safety regulations.
   • Perform emissions tests and make adjustments to ensure vehicles comply with environmental standards.
   • Inspect tires, brakes, and lights for safety compliance.

6. Customer Interaction:

   • Communicate with customers about vehicle issues, repairs needed, and maintenance recommendations.
   • Provide detailed explanations of diagnostics and repair work, ensuring customers understand the scope and costs of repairs.
   • Offer advice on vehicle care and maintenance to enhance longevity and performance.

7. Record Keeping & Documentation:

   • Maintain accurate records of all repairs and maintenance services performed.
   • Document parts used, labor hours, and diagnostic codes for reference and customer billing.
   • Keep records for warranty claims and insurance documentation.

8. Tool & Equipment Use:

   • Utilize specialized tools such as wrenches, diagnostic scanners, lifts, and hoists to perform repairs.
   • Maintain and calibrate diagnostic tools and ensure they are in proper working condition.
   • Use advanced equipment to perform wheel alignments, emissions testing, and computerized diagnostics.

9. Continuous Learning & Certification:

   • Stay updated on the latest automotive technologies and repair techniques by attending workshops and training programs.
   • Pursue industry certifications, such as ASE (Automotive Service Excellence), to enhance skills and credibility.
   • Learn new vehicle models, technologies, and systems as they are introduced to the market.

Required Skills:

• Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of automotive systems, including engines, transmissions, electrical systems, and fuel injection systems.
• Problem-Solving: Ability to quickly diagnose and solve complex mechanical or electrical problems.
• Attention to Detail: Precision in diagnosing, repairing, and replacing vehicle components.
• Manual Dexterity: Skill in handling tools and parts efficiently, as well as performing detailed repairs.
• Communication Skills: Ability to explain technical issues to customers in simple terms and provide clear recommendations.
• Computer Literacy: Familiarity with diagnostic software and computerized systems used in modern vehicles.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Completion of an automotive technology program from a vocational or technical school.
• ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certification is highly preferred.
• Experience in automotive repair and diagnostics, preferably in a dealership or independent repair shop.
• Valid driver’s license.

Working Conditions:

• Exposure to noise, fumes, and hazardous materials like chemicals and oils is common.
• Physical demands include standing for extended periods, lifting heavy parts, and working in various postures, such as bending or lying underneath vehicles.
