Job Summary:

An Auto Body Technician is responsible for repairing and restoring damaged vehicle body panels, frames, and exterior components. This role involves diagnosing and fixing damage from accidents, wear, or weather exposure. The Auto Body Technician uses a variety of tools and techniques to straighten frames, remove dents, replace damaged parts, and repaint vehicles. The goal is to restore the vehicle to its original condition in terms of safety, appearance, and functionality.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Damage Assessment & Diagnostics:

    • Inspect vehicles to determine the extent of structural, body, or mechanical damage.
    • Use diagnostic tools and visual inspections to assess required repairs.
    • Provide detailed estimates for repair costs, parts, and labor.
  2. Body Repair & Restoration:

    • Remove damaged body parts such as bumpers, fenders, hoods, and panels.
    • Repair or replace structural components like frames, underbodies, and supports.
    • Realign chassis and frames using specialized equipment to restore the vehicle to factory specifications.
  3. Dent Removal:

    • Use tools such as hammers, dollies, and hydraulic presses to remove dents, straighten metal panels, and restore the shape of vehicle exteriors.
    • Perform precision work on smaller dents using techniques such as paintless dent repair.
  4. Welding & Metalwork:

    • Perform welding and cutting to repair damaged sections of metal or to fit new parts.
    • Fabricate new parts when necessary to restore damaged areas.
  5. Painting & Refinishing:

    • Sand down repaired or replaced parts and prepare surfaces for painting.
    • Apply primer, base coats, and topcoats using spray guns or other methods to match the vehicle’s original color and finish.
    • Buff and polish painted surfaces for a high-quality finish.
  6. Glass & Trim Installation:

    • Remove and replace damaged windshields, windows, and other glass components.
    • Install and repair trim pieces, moldings, and accessories to restore the vehicle’s aesthetic appearance.
  7. Mechanical Component Repair:

    • Replace or repair mechanical parts such as suspension components, radiators, or cooling systems that may have been damaged in accidents.
    • Align wheels and suspension after bodywork and frame adjustments.
  8. Customer Interaction:

    • Communicate with customers to explain the nature of repairs and provide progress updates.
    • Advise customers on repair options and time frames.
    • Ensure customer satisfaction by addressing concerns and providing high-quality repairs.
  9. Safety & Compliance:

    • Follow safety protocols for working with hazardous materials, chemicals, and heavy machinery.
    • Ensure repairs comply with safety standards, regulations, and manufacturer guidelines.
    • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  10. Record Keeping & Documentation:

    • Maintain detailed records of repairs, parts used, and services provided.
    • Document repair processes and final inspections.
    • Report to insurance companies for claim documentation and approval.

Required Skills:

  • Technical Knowledge: Expertise in vehicle body construction, welding, painting, and metal repair techniques.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to assess complex body damage and find appropriate repair solutions.
  • Attention to Detail: Precision in bodywork and painting to ensure repairs are seamless and meet manufacturer specifications.
  • Mechanical Aptitude: Understanding of mechanical systems that may be affected by body damage, such as suspensions and cooling systems.
  • Physical Dexterity: Ability to work with hand tools, power tools, and welding equipment in various positions.
  • Customer Service: Strong communication skills to explain repair processes and maintain positive customer relationships.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of an auto body repair certification program or technical school is preferred.
  • Experience in auto body repair and painting.
  • Proficiency in welding and metalwork techniques.
  • Familiarity with computerized diagnostic tools and equipment.
  • Valid driver’s license (may be required).

Working Conditions:

  • Work is typically performed in a body shop or collision repair center.
  • Exposure to dust, paint fumes, and chemicals requires the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Physical demands include lifting heavy parts, bending, and standing for long periods.
