Working in the Cayman Islands: Men and Women have Different Goals
The Grand Caymans
The Cayman Islands is a British territory that is situated in the Caribbean. They consist of a chain of three islands, or the Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman. Most residents live and work on the Grand Cayman.
Where the Islands Got their Name
The island group was first spotted by Christopher Columbus in May 1533 while on his last voyage to the New World. The islands, at the time, were christened Las Tortugas, which referred to the large number of sea turtles found in the area. However, the name was later changed, in 1586, by the first English visitor to the Caymans, Sir Francis Drake, who called them “caiman” – a Neo-Taino (Caribbean) word meaning “crocodile.”
Indirect Taxation Makes the Economy Strong
Residents enjoy a tropical, marine climate as well as the highest standard of living among Caribbean nations. In fact the per capita GDP (Gross Domestic Product) in the country is ranked 14th worldwide. The main source of income is derived from indirect taxation, or from such taxes as sales tax, Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Value Added Tax (VAT). If you plan on working in the Cayman Islands, you will not be assessed a tax on your income – a nice perk for anyone who wants to live in this part of the world. The island is a center for tourism and also has the noted distinction of having more registered companies or businesses than people. Airports are located on each one of the three islands with the Owen Roberts International Airport operating out of the main island or the Grand Cayman.
How People Spend their Leisure Hours
Locals spend their leisure hours watching football, which is the country’s number one spectator sport. Flag football and rugby are played by both men and women.
Men and Women Have Different Reasons for Working in the Cayman Islands
However, if recent research is correct, men and women don’t exactly have a meeting of the minds when it comes to working in the Cayman Islands or elsewhere as they usually have different reasons for seeking employment. While men seek job opportunities that allow them to progress in their careers, women like working in jobs in the Cayman Islands that allow them some latitude and flexibility while working. Therefore, men are usually more concerned with advancement while women seek careers where there is some job flexibility.
Other Revealing Statistics
Survey results showed that men value a company that is financially sound while women seek companies that offer an enjoyable environment in which to work. Women, too, like to be in close access to where they work while men favor organizations that have a strong focus on leadership. The same survey showed that women liked work environments where they could learn and develop their skills while men opted for companies that provided long-term security.
A Pleasant Place to Hone One’s Skills and Make a Living
So, while men and women may have different reasons for working in the Cayman Islands, they probably both agree that this area in the Caribbean is a pleasant region to hone one’s skills and make a living.
