Drink Up! A Practical Guide to Upping Your Daily Water Intake

Staying hydrated is essential for staying healthy and productive, especially during the region’s hot summers. The human body is made up of 60% water and not providing it with the water it needs can lead to a number of different issues which make it difficult to complete your tasks at work. Keeping up with your water intake may seem difficult, but we have some tips to keep you hydrated.

1. Invest in a water bottle.
Buying water daily can be inconvenient, costly and tends to result in overuse of plastic bottles. However, purchasing a reusable bottle of at least 16 ounces makes it easier for you to refill less frequently throughout the day. This also saves you money in the long run.

Having reusable bottles also allow you to be more mobile as you fill up in kitchens, at water coolers or at fountains.

Bonus Tip: If you prefer cold water, invest in a metal bottle. It keeps your water at the perfect temperature for longer hours.

2. Substitute drinks for water.
Finding it difficult to beat the soft drink habit? We’ve all been there! Kicking the habit may seem hard but slowly switching out your drinks at meal times can make all the difference. Working water into your diet by replacing a soda at lunch or juice with breakfast can transform your habits slowly but surely. For the less disciplined, diluting your soft drinks or juices allow your body to adjust to the lack of sugar.

3. Infusing water with fruit.
If you can’t quite adjust to the taste of only water or find yourself becoming bored with the increase, try infusing your water with fruit. Using fruits like strawberries, which are high in antioxidants or lime, which helps with acid reflux, not only make it easier for you to increase your water intake, they also positively affect your diet.

Bonus Tip: Refrigerate your fruit-infused water overnight for an added treat and play around with different mixtures of fruit or herbs, like mint, to really spice it up.

4. Eat your water.
Much of our food is comprised of water, so “eating” your water is a healthy way to increase your water intake. Increasing the amount of water-based foods you consume can be super easy once you have options. For heavier options, soups and smoothies are a great choice. For lighter options, teas and fruits high in water content provide a wide variety. Fruits such as watermelon, cucumber and cantaloupe have loads of water coupled with vitamins and antioxidants. This makes for a healthy way to increase your energy and be more productive.
