For many, the reality of work today is characterised by frustration, turbulence, uncertainty, excitement, expectation and dashed hopes.

The ambiguity of workplace experiences, the apparent availability of opportunities and the deep-seated disappointment that many face are all manifestations of our frequent inability to address the core issues of Career and Life Satisfaction.

The fact is that few of us have been guided to develop the skills or tools to manage our lives and our careers. Without a life-philosophy and belief system and with little or no sense of what contributes to life-success and career satisfaction, most of us flounder through a series of frustrating workplace experiences.

We seek after the ultimate package or position without the requisite sense of purpose and passion to guide us. We expend excessive energy in the vain hope that “”hard work” will “get us there”.

We are attracted by and respond to jobs and organisations that appear appealing and headed in a direction that suits us. But we seldom consider our life direction and the extent to which the job or the organisation are aligned to our true purpose.

Many of these dilemmas are tolerable and manageable in our early years in the workplace. Our energy is infinite – or so we think. We have time to make changes – or so we think. We will find the “right job” soon – or so we think. The job does not matter as long as the package is right – or so we think.

Run and avoid it as much as we try, one day our faulty assumptions and misguided decisions catch up with us. We are face to face with the emptiness of a job that does not satisfy, in spite of the perks and the position. We get to a place where our quiet moments are riddled with thoughts about the fact that our life has been a failure, that our youthful dreams are about to die and we are unlikely to accomplish the satisfaction and success that we had hoped and longed for. We have to confront the fact that our quality of life and our life satisfaction are significantly reduced because of our lack of awareness and knowledge about the powerful connections between the self, work, life and purpose.

It is never too late to discover who and what we really are and to determine our Life Purpose. We can learn to live life purposefully, to work with meaning and to find what we love and to love what we do!! It is possible to understand what work really is and to approach it as a vehicle for living successfully and with meaning.

We can discover, acquire and use the tools that help us to define our Skill Base, to focus on our Values, to determine our Work Orientation and Interests, to mobilise the strengths of our Behavioural Style. Armed with these tools, we can explore the World of Work, understand its intricacies and opportunities and make that most vital of decisions – zeroing in on the kind of work that the world needs and that best suits who we are.

The intention is not to “get the best job” but to Live Our Best Life – to bring our gifts to the world, to do our best work, to work with meaning, to have what we need, to make a difference. To walk this road requires courage. It means letting go of many of our “old thoughts” about work and about ourselves. It means stepping into our selves in a way that we may never have before. It means presenting ourselves to the world in a way that we may have never dared to previously. It means setting out on a pathway to discovery. “The future is not a place to which we are going – it is a place we are creating. The paths to the future are not found, but made and the activity of making them changes both the maker and the destination.”

We invite you to take this journey, to create a new future for yourself!!
