Working and Living in Antigua: Job Seeking Tips

Antigua Career Opportunities

Antigua, also referred to as Waladi, is an island located in the Caribbean in the West Indies. Named by Christopher Columbus for an icon located in Spain’s Seville Cathedral, the island provides opportunities for job seekers in the tourism, financial services, and manufacturing.

Jobs in the Financial Sector are in Good Supply

Indeed, if your specialty is finance or accounting, then working and living in Antigua can be advantageous. Antigua is home to major global financial institutions, including the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), Barclays, Scotia Bank, and the Bank of America (Bank of Antigua). The financial services sector is also well-represented by PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

Other Antigua Industries: Electronic Components Manufacturing and Air Travel

In addition to the foregoing financial firms, job searchers can also find opportunities in companies that focus on the manufacturing of bedding and electronic components. Major airlines operate out of Antigua too, including Virgin Atlantic, British Airways, U.S. Airways, Delta Airlines, United Airlines, American Airlines, Caribbean Airlines, and Air Canada.

A Basic Understanding of Body Language is Helpful on Interviews

Naturally, these opportunities make the idea of working and living in Antigua a dream for many job seekers. Therefore, if working and living in Antigua is your goal as well, you’ll want to prepare a well-formatted resume and learn the proper interviewing skills. Included in this preparation, is a basic understanding of body language too. After all, employers can reveal a little bit about their impression of you by their gestures and expressions. As a result, you can pick up some key cues on an interview.

Looking for Clues

For example, signs that the interviewer is pleased with your answers or is comfortable with the interview can be revealed by his level of relaxation. Does he hold eye contact for a while? Does he appear to be comfortable with the process? Or, does he seem distracted? Negative cues can include scratching the back of one’s head, the nose or eyes, or leaning or looking away.

Be Brief but Succinct

That’s why it’s good to have a resume prepared that notably parallels the qualifications of the job you are seeking. Brevity is the key – whether you are highlighting your skills and experience, writing a cover letter, or answering interview questions. Of course, you want to make sure that you present or say something that is worthwhile too.

Create your Personal Brand

So, if you’ve set a goal toward working and living in Antigua, you’ll want to tailor your job search so you apply for jobs that closely match your background and expertise. Create your personal brand with your CV. Show how your skills and personal attributes match the prerequisites of the job to which you are applying. You want to emphasize your qualifications, so a well-formatted resume and a calm and confident manner will keep employers interested in looking more in-depth at your experience and skillset.

Conveying the Right Body Language Yourself

Your own body language then should convey one of an applicant who is composed and self-assured. Stay focused on getting the job and you will eventually realize your dream of working and living in Antigua.
