Noteworthy Reads for Caribbean Business-Minds

Business in Trinidad and Tobago is definitely buzzing with lots of activity and sometimes it’s hard to keep up. Everyday enterprise and industry forge ahead with new developments in the country and sometimes it can be hard to jump in on conversations without knowing the full story around trending topics in business. To stay connected with what’s happening and also be fully informed when the time calls for it (like during interviews or at events), it pays to be well-read.

Here are a few publishers online that you can follow for business news breaking locally, in Trinidad, and globally:
1. Who’s Who – This local business directory is released annually with a list of the names and the faces of industry leaders. If you happen to see one lying around in a coffee shop or lobby, take a minute to flip through its pages and read up on who’s who in your professional space. There are also some insightful articles on subjects important to the local economy as well – you can use this content as a highlight of what might usually be the subject matter of serious chatter.

2. Contact – This business magazine is also a local title. Published by the TT Chamber of Commerce, the mag was recently relaunched with a cleaner and sleeker visual style. Similar to Who’s Who, the publication also serves as a directory of names and faces on the local business scene.

3. The Economist – You have probably heard of this weekly magazine-format newspaper before and it’s for good reason. The content leads in thoughtful journalism which captures the unbiased points of view that matter in sound economic reportage. Take a look at their online columns as well as their growing video archive for simple to understand coverage on global topics.

4. The Business Guardian, Trinidad and Tobago – The local answer to any “What’s happening in local business today?” type question. The Business Guardian is probably the most read supplement of the local newspaper as it fills a much needed gap in local news coverage. Its columnists report on politics, trade, business, finance, as well as international news which keep local readers connected.

5. The Harvard Business Review – This is an online platform that focuses on the soft-skills and advice for business orientated readers. If you are passionate about your career development, this is the title to read. Articles are often written to enhance your emotional intelligence in the workplace while simultaneously counselling you in relationships with management – consider the advice in its articles as vital read if you wish to advance your career.

You will find that, when informed, many business conversations in Trinidad and Tobago are highly engaging and enjoyable. Passionate business folk who are well read in their areas of expertise tend to be highly favoured by their audience and can keep them captivated for extended periods. Whether you are selling your personal brand or getting to know new colleagues at an industry mixer event, improving your awareness of relevant industry topics will always prove beneficial to casual banter.
