Working in Jamaica

Make Sure you Meet the Criteria for Working in Jamaica before your Start Applying for Jobs

Obtain a Work Permit First if you Have Made Working in Jamaica a Goal

Like the idea of basking in the rays of the Jamaican sunshine in your leisure time? Have you thought quite a bit about living and working in Jamaica? Then, before you start on your job search, you’ll need to obtain a work permit.

Contact the Office of the Minister of Labour in Kingston

If you are not from Jamaica, you’ll need to obtain the necessary permit from the office of the Minister of Labour in Kingston, the capital. The office is located at 1F North Street. So, if you are from the U.S. and are setting your sights toward working in Jamaica, you’ll need to possess the work permit before you land on the island. However, individuals who are citizens of the British Commonwealth can apply for the permit after they arrive in the country.

Non-Jamaicans with an Offer of Employment will Need Supporting Documentation

Therefore, if you are from the U.S, you’ll need to have the work permit in hand before searching for work. If you’ve already received an offer of employment from a Jamaican employer, you can gain the necessary guidance from the company where you’ll be working on how to handle the processing of the government paperwork. Supplemental documentation you will need includes:

·         – An original letter that confirms that a job offer was made;

·         – The work permit, approved with the signature of the Minister of Labour;

·         – A current passport; and

·         – A visa application and fee accompanied by a passport-type photo

Stay Focused on a Definite Career Choice if you Plan on Working in Jamaica

Naturally, as non-Jamaicans are required to follow a certain set of guidelines if they plan on working in Jamaica, they should also be clear about what they want to do for a living in the island country. As there are a variety of job opportunities available, it’s good to concentrate on how you want to channel your energies in the Jamaican job market.

Working in Jamaica – A Diverse Sampling of Jobs

Indeed, working in Jamaica provides ample opportunity for people to enlist their skills in a number of trades. Jamaica has a diverse market of job opportunities in both the private business sector as well as state-run enterprises. Primary areas of employment include mining, agriculture, manufacturing, tourism, insurance and finance.

Direct your Job Search toward Jobs that Closely Correspond with your Skills and Abilities

So, obviously, if you have made it your goal to direct your energies toward working in Jamaica, you also need to narrow down your job search choices so you can concentrate on obtaining employment for a specific-type job.

If you Plan on Working in Jamaica, You’ll Need to Send out Some Letters of Inquiry

You should also be specific when writing a letter of inquiry about jobs that match your background and skillset. Make sure that you phrase the correspondence so that the employer immediately comprehends your area of interest. Use language that is professional yet enthusiastic while keeping the wording simple and direct. Request that you set up a time to further discuss your qualifications rather than suggesting an interview. Create a rapport that invites further discussion and you will eventually fulfill your goal of living and working in Jamaica.
