Job Overview
The Accountant performs professional accounting and administrative work which assists in maintaining the SCHSBM’s accounting and budgeting functions and responsibilities and exercises independent judgment and discretion in planning and carrying out the details of work procedures and methods.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Monitors the business activities of the organisation through the maintenance and control of financial records.
• Monitors and maintains key accounting information for the operating unit within the finance system.
• Interprets and analyses financial operations and transactions, forecasts trends, develops special complex reports and analyses for management; makes recommendations for asset utilization and expenditure control.
• Prepares required and assigned reports by compiling, research and analysing data.
• Prepares monthly summaries and reports for internal use by compiling information and reconciling ledger accounts.
• Prepares journal entries for the general ledger and various subsidiary ledgers by compiling, researching and analysing data regarding updates needed.
• Performs monthly reconciliations by reviewing the work of the accounting clerks and others to ensure their work is accurate and complete.
• Prepares audit workpapers for internal, external, and agency auditors by researching and analysing the data in the SCHSBM accounting information.
• Prepares audit workpapers for the fiscal year audit by research and analysing the year-to-date accounting information.
• Assists with the preparation and construction of the SCHSBM Operating Budget by gathering information, analysing financial data, and compiling the budget document.
• Assists with the monthly financial statement close process of the SCHSBM.
• Assists with the preparation of reports for the Board of Directors and Finance Committee.
• Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development seminars, and attending training and/or classes as directed.
• May supervise personnel which may include recommendations for hiring, performance evaluation, training, work allocation and problem resolution.
• Contributes to the overall success of the assigned office by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Finance Director.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
• Knowledge of computerized information systems used in financial and/ or accounting applications.
• Knowledge of contracting processes associated with local regulations.
• Knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting and cost control procedures.
• Knowledge of software to quantify and illustrate complex financial reports, comparisons, impacts and/ or projections.
• Working knowledge of financial software to quantify and illustrate complex financial reports, statements and/ or projections.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to multitask.
• Must be able to work independently and make critical decisions.

Experience
• At least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or a related discipline.
• A professional designation is preferred (CPA, ACCA, CFA, CMA etc.).
