The Technical Officer will be responsible for conceptualizing and developing coordinated research projects, as well as planning and implementing projects and programmes to ensure that the work of the Department is in line with the EMA’s mandate and strategic goals.

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The roles and responsibilities of the Technical Officer II in the Environmental Analysis and Coordination Department are as follows:

  • Conduct activities required as part of the process for the designation of Environmentally Sensitive Areas (ESAs) and Environmentally Sensitive Species (ESS) in Trinidad and Tobago
  • Develop and implement management plans for designated ESAs and ESS.
  • Conduct activities required for the development, implementation and monitoring of Public Sector Investment Programme (PSIP) and non-PSIP projects, including but not limited to the development of Project Proposals, Terms of References and Implementation Plans, Evaluation of technical proposals
  • Provide technical support to regulatory functions of the EMA, e.g. review of Environmental Impact Assessment reports and permit conditions.
  • Conduct research related to environmental management issues and maintain up to date information as it relates to biodiversity matters.
  • Conduct activities to facilitate the planning and execution of seminars, technical presentations and other means of information exchange with stakeholders
  • Analyse biodiversity data to identify trends, potential threats, and conservation priorities.
  • Support the development and implement of systems for data and information management, which will inform decision making and the production of reports, guideline documents, etc.
  • Develop appropriate guidelines documents (Standard Operating Procedures, Best Management Practices etc.)
  • Constantly refine and make suggestions towards the improvement of the various processes
  • Educate and engage the public, local communities, and other stakeholders on biodiversity conservation.
  • Represent the EMA on internal and external committees, meetings and seminars/workshops.
  • Support the development of Work Plans.
  • Any other related duties that may be assigned by the Supervisor/Manager

 

KNOWLEDGE, QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Ecology, Natural Resource Management, or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in biodiversity, ecology, or conservation work.
  • Proficiency in GIS, statistical analysis, and biodiversity monitoring techniques would be an asset
  • Strong organizational skills and time management.
  • Knowledge of laws, statutes, rules, regulations and standards pertaining to Environmental Management.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to efficiently implement and regulate all procedures and requirements outlined under the required legislation.
  • Competent in using Microsoft Office Suite, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
