The Tax Senior In House Counsel will be involved in all aspects of overseeing and ensuring the delivery of Tax engagements from planning through to completion. Your role will include executive level client interaction and provide you with exposure to multiple clients on a regular basis.

KPMG in Caricom is seeking to hire a dynamic, results-oriented and highly motivated Tax Senior In-House Counsel. The successful candidates will be involved in all aspects of overseeing and ensuring the delivery of Tax engagements from planning through to completion. Your role will include executive level client interaction and provide you with exposure to multiple clients on a regular basis.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Prepares and reviews draft correspondence to clients, and to the tax authorities in response to tax notices served on clients.
  • Prepares and reviews complete, well-reasoned and reader-friendly technical tax analyses or tax advisories for approval by the Tax Partner, and subsequent issue to clients.
  • Researches tax and other relevant laws to inform compliance and advisory exercises, and to build understanding of domestic and international tax concepts. Undertakes relevant study to develop or increase that knowledge.
  • Acts as a first point of contact for clients, and competently liaises with clients on assigned matters.
  • Keeps abreast of client issues with a view to improving our service or identifying other service opportunities by contacting clients regularly regarding work matters or following up on outstanding invoices.
  • Liaises with the revenue authorities to address issues such as tax assessments, appeals and interpretations of tax laws and regulations.
  • Builds a strong relationship with key taxing authority representatives to facilitate the resolution of client tax matters.
  • Develops tax strategies to maximize tax efficiency and to provide business and tax planning advice for clients.
  • Reviews contracts, leases, and other legal documents, and researches legal issues and recommends revisions as necessary.
  • Supervises and mentors and develops associates and senior associates.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest developments in taxation, transfer pricing, law and in other areas relevant to the role.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor of Laws Degree.
  • A graduate of the Norman Manley Law School or the Hugh Wooding Law School or a graduate of Law School in another Commonwealth territory, with a minimum of seven years’ post-qualification experience.
  • A Master’s Degree in Taxation would be an asset.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
  • Experience in Jamaican or Caribbean or United Kingdom taxation, or at Tax Administration Jamaica or at a Taxation Services practice is a distinct advantage.
  • Strong computer skills, with strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications.
  • Strong written, verbal communication and interpersonal relationship skills.
  • Initiative and strong organisational skills.
  • Good time management skills, with the ability to work under pressure in meeting tight deadlines.
  • Good analytical skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Strong knowledge of contract law is an asset.

KEY SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of current and developing tax, transfer pricing and legal issues and trends.
  • Knowledge of the principles and procedures of legal research.
  • Ability to analyse and interpret issues and to prepare complex domestic and international tax opinions.
  • Knowledge of the full range of applicable domestic and international laws, regulations and guidelines which impact on and inform transfer pricing rules.
  • Ability to demonstrate attention to detail, meet deadlines and work independently and cooperatively with team members.
  • Ability to develop and deliver presentations to clients and internal stakeholders.
  • Ability to communicate in a clear, articulate, and audible manner.
  • Ability to adapt communication and influencing style to suit different situations, individuals, or teams.
  • Ability to deal confidently with challenges by responding with a rationale to support positions.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully operate in a multifaceted reporting environment.
  • Ability to communicate and interact with multiple stakeholders in multiple jurisdictions.
  • Negotiating skills.
  • Ability to provide competent legal advice and counsel to Partners on a wide range of legal issues.
