Staff Pharmacist

The BVI Health Services Authority (a client-centered healthcare organization) invites qualified and professional applicants for the position of Staff Pharmacist.  Provision of pharmaceutical services to patrons of the British Virgin Islands Health Services Authority. This includes the preparation of medications by reviewing and interpretation of physician orders, detecting therapeutic incompatibilities. Also responsible for dispensing medication by compounding, packaging, and labeling of pharmaceuticals. Control medication by monitoring drug therapies and advising intervention.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (included but not limited to):

  1. Dispenses medication and other pharmaceutical supplies by compounding, packaging, and labeling to patrons of the BVIHSA and other private institutions as prescribed by a local, licensed physician.
  2. Provide after hour support of patients, physicians and nursing staff by performing remote verification of physician orders via the MEDITECH Health Information System.
  3. Pre-verifies and inspects all unit dose medications that are packaged on the Cadet Twin® and Medidose® packaging systems to ensure that they are in accordance with current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs) and BVIHSA infection control guidelines.
  4. Prepares medications by reviewing and interpreting physician orders; detecting therapeutic incompatibilities and providing intervention where necessary.
  5. Provides pharmacoeconomic, pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic information to health care professionals and counseling patients on precaution and efficacy specific to the medication dispensed.
  6. Compounds extemporaneous preparations according to international recognized standards, and measures and mixes drug in response to outpatient prescriptions and ward requests.
  7. Reviews and prepares all prescriptions received via electronic forms of communication such as email and instant messaging applications (e.g. Whatsapp®).
  8. Completes pharmacy operational requirements by organizing and directing Pharmacy Technicians work flow; verifying their preparation and labeling of pharmaceutical preparations.
  9. Responsible for supervising or restocking the Omnicell cabinet for both Narcotic and Non-narcotic restock.
  10. Medication management of emergency code carts.
  11. Dispensing of controlled drugs from CSM (Control Substance Management), including return of medication, entering of new stock from vendors and expired items.
  12. Participate on emergency codes within the hospital as required for example Telestroke code
  13. Maintains a high level of confidentiality according to conditions outline according to the BVIHSA policy on confidentiality.
  14. Provides the appropriate information and advice to health professionals and the public using available texts and references.
  15. Log and reports medication errors to Pharmacy Manager as per Pharmacy error reporting policy.
  16. Records and stores patient prescription records according to legal requirements.
  17. Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
  18. Attends regional conferences for the purpose of continuing pharmaceutical education so    as to enhance the level of pharmacy services rendered to the public.
  19. Maintain a safe and clean working environment.
  20. Performs other duties as assigned by the Pharmacy Manager

Minimum Requirements:

Educational/Training Requirements

v  Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy from an accredited institution

v  Certificate Additional certification relevant to the job description would be an asset.

Experience

v  Minimum of two (2) years post internship experience as a registered qualified pharmacist.

Licences/Certificates

v  Must be registered with the Allied Health Council

v  Acquire a minimum of 12CE credits annually

Knowledge, skills and abilities

v  Sound pharmacy skills

v  Experience with electronic Health Information Systems

v  Excellent written and oral communication skills

v  Sound interpersonal skills

v  Sound knowledge in relevant computer skills including spreadsheet and word processing.

v  Working knowledge of pharmaceutical balances, other pharmacy equipment and office machinery e.g. photocopiers and scanners.
