Job Description
The Senior Legal Counsel provides support to the General Counsel in interpreting and applying the laws relevant to the operations of the Gambling (Gaming and Betting) Commission. Work involves representing the Commission in legal proceedings, advising and drafting legal documents on the more complex legal matters involving the Commission. They are also responsible for assisting in managing the day-to-day operations of the legal department, and providing legal advice to the management and staff of the Commission.
Qualifications and Experience:
Bachelor of Laws Degree (LLB) from a recognised institution
A Legal Education Certificate (LEC) or equivalent
Admission to practice Law in Trinidad and Tobago.
A minimum of eight (8) to ten (10) years post-qualification experience, of which, a minimum of three (3) years performing similar functions at a supervisory level
Considerable knowledge of the Laws of Trinidad and Tobago.
Considerable knowledge of legal principles, practices, and procedures.
Considerable knowledge of legal drafting principles and practices.
Considerable knowledge of legal research skills and techniques.
Considerable knowledge of court procedures and practices and of rules of evidence.
Key Accountabilities:
Advises on the more complex legal issues related to the administration, interpretation, and enforcement of laws pertaining to the Commission.
Prepares legal advice on demand for internal stakeholders on all issues affecting the operations of the Commission.
Manages the preparation for hearings and trials; reviews and ensures adequacy of documentation in determining how cases should be handled.
Represents the Commission in legal proceedings on miscellaneous subject matters or assigns appropriate legal counsel.
Reviews departmental policies and procedures to advise and ensure conformity and compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
Supervises the preparation of instructions for submission to external legal counsel on legal matters involving the Commission.
Supervises the conduct of research and analysis on legal matters pertinent to the Commission’s operations.
