The Senior Accountant is responsible for the preparation of the monthly financial statements and the annual statutory accounts to ensure their accuracy, timeliness and compliance with international accounting standards.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Operational: 

Prepares monthly financial statements

  • Prepares or verifies journal vouchers of transactions that are required to close off month end financials.
  • Reviews and analyses account transactions and trial balances for submission to the direct supervisor in the preparation of financial statements from the management reporting softwar.
  • Verifies and amends the financial statements by checking the accuracy of data posted into the General Ledger and preparing adjusting journals to correct errors found.

Reconciles monthly balance sheet accounts

  • Reviews and analyses the assigned balance sheet accounts by preparing schedules based on financial information posted for the month into the General Ledger.
  • Prepares adjusting journals with the supporting documents that explains any errors found in the balance sheet accounts.
  • Ensures that reconciled items are cleared monthly for each assigned account.

Prepares annual financial statements for statutory audit

  • Closes off the financial year end by ensuring all year end journals have been posted and the General Ledger accounts balance with the approved financial statements.  
  • Ensures all balance sheet account reconciliations are accurately completed by reviewing the schedule of transactions ensuring that the balance reconciles to the General Ledger and that all outstanding items are cleared.
  • Ensures all adjusting journals are prepared to correct errors as identified on the reconciliations and after reviewing each General Ledger account.
  • Prepares the draft year-end financial statements with notes to the accounts in compliance with international accounting standards for final approval before submission to the Auditor General.
  • Prepares audit schedules for all balance sheet accounts in preparation for the audit

Manages Inventory and Fixed Asset counts and records

  • Confirms the accuracy of the Inventory and Fixed Asset counts recorded in the general ledger by coordinating the conduct of the Inventory count every month and the Fixed Asset count every two years.
  • Manages the asset and inventory reconciliations by verifying that they are properly and accurately prepared monthly and at year end and that all reconciling items are cleared in a timely manner.  

Other

  • Assists with the annual audit by the Auditor General Department by resolving queries and providing documents as required.
  • Serves as a member of the Finance Sub-Committee of the Board by presenting the monthly financial statements and provide additional information and explanations as requested.
Reporting:

Prepares and submits reports

  • Prepares monthly and annual statements of income and expenditure for submission to the Ministry of Finance by reviewing the General Ledger accounts and entering the relevant data into spreadsheets.
  • Generates interim financial reports (e.g., the Comparative Data Reports) for submission to the Ministry of Finance and the Sport and Culture Fund by compiling and updating the spreadsheet with the current month’s financial information.
  • Prepares Financial Statements for submission to the Board of Directors by including a summarised review of account transactions and trial balances.

Performs related work as may be required by the job functions. 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance from a recognised institution
  • Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) certification from a recognised institution

Or

An equivalent combination of training and experience

Experience

  • A minimum of 5 years' experience in Accounting or Finance
  • Thorough demonstrated proficiency in the field of Accounting or Finance
