Risk Manager

The BVI Health Services Authority (a client-centered healthcare organization) invites qualified and professional applicants for the position of Risk Manager. The Risk Manager is responsible for the facility’s risk management program on a day-to-day basis, managing and analyzing risk management data, and conducting risk management educational programs.  The Risk Manager complies with risk management related standards by accrediting and regulatory agencies with the objective of enhancing patient safety, promoting patient safety, quality care, and minimizing loss to protect the assets of the facility.  The Risk Manager participates in formulating policy and/or organizational changes, but must seek advice and approval from higher authority.  Risk management may be one of several areas of responsibility for this individual.  

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (included but not limited to): 

  • Develops, coordinates, and administers facility-wide systems for risk identification, investigation, and reduction, maintains a network of informational sources and experts; performs risk surveys and inspects patient care areas; reviews facility to assess loss potential.
  • Participates on committees directed towards promoting patient safety issues.
  • Maintains risk management statistics and files in compliance with accrediting and regulatory agencies; promotes maximum confidentiality by limiting access of such information.  Also strives to verify that the following information is accurate, available, and secure:  medical records, patient billings records, policy and procedures, incident reports, medical examiner’s reports (if available), as well as any other data pertinent to a particular claim.
  • Collects, evaluates, and distributes relevant data concerning patient injuries: aggregate data summaries, monthly trend analysis of incidents, claims profile, provides aggregate analysis of risk, data; maintains statistical trending of losses and other risk management data.
  • Informs directors of service and department heads regarding occurrences, issues, findings, and risk management suggestions, provides feedback to directors at all level in an effort to eliminate risks; assists clinical chairs and department heads in designing risk management programs within their department.
  • Works with legal counsel to coordinate the investigation, processing, and defence of claims against the facility; records, collects, documents, maintains, and provides to defence attorneys, requested information and document, necessary to prepare testimony in pending litigation. 
  • Responds to professional liability and facility liability questions posed by physicians, nurses and other personnel.
  • Advises security on procedures to reduce the frequent and/or minimize the severity of property loss or assets.
  • Provides assistance to departments in complying with accrediting agencies, regarding risk management related standards.
  • Recommends appropriate revision to new or existing policies and procedures to reduce the frequency of future occurrences; recommends ways to minimize risks through system changes; reviews and revises facility policy as appropriate to maintain adherence to current standards and requirements.  Proactive analysis of patient safety and medical errors processes.
  • Participates in the process of disclosure for medical errors.
  • Participates in root cause analysis investigation and reporting of adverse drug events and sentinel events to the appropriate parties.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (included but not limited to):

  • Maintains awareness of legislative and regulatory activities related to health care risk management.
  • Complies with various codes, laws, rules, and regulations concerning patient care, including those mandated by legal regulations, incident reporting, includes investigation activities of all enforcement authorities.
  • Provides in-services training to facility’s personnel to enhance their awareness of their role in reducing liability exposures.
  • Takes steps to ascertain that risks are minimized through follow-up and actions on all regulatory/insurance survey report and recommendations/deficiencies.
  • Receives and investigates reports of product problems to determine appropriate response (in-house recalls, independent evaluations, etc).
  • Receives incident reports and other information regarding untoward occurrences in the facility, such as quality assurance outliers or variations, and collates such information systematically to permit analysis pursuant to risk management policy and procedure.
  • Investigates and analyses actual and potential risks in the institution; assesses liability and probability of legal action for potential notification of insurance carriers.
  • Directly refers to administration, those incidents with claims potential; reports to higher authority any serious event involving actual or potential injury to patients, visitors, or employees.
  • With Director of Hospital Services, reviews patient complaints that may be the source of potential legal action; discusses and offers solutions when possible to resolve with patient and/or family and grievances perceived as potential liability claims. 
  • Notifies the liability insurance (indemnity) carrier of all actual and potential claims.
  • Performs any other assigned duties within scope of practice.
