Registered Nurse (Accident & Emergency)

The BVI Health Services Authority (a client-centered healthcare organization) invites qualified and professional applicants to apply for the position of Registered Nurse (Accident & Emergency). Responsible for the delivery of quality patient care through the – nursing process of assessment, diagnosing, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The RN is responsible for directing and coordinating all nursing care for patients based on established clinical nursing practice standards. The Emergency Care Nurse must have expertise in recognizing life-threatening problems and complications in the emergent and critical patients. He/She is responsible for learning how to operate all technological equipment utilized in the department. The functions preformed require judgment based on the application of scientific knowledge and guided by the policies/guidelines of the organization and the unit. The RN collaborates with other professional disciplines to ensure effective and efficient patient care delivery and the achievement of desired patient outcome. The RN utilizes knowledge of patient’s age and cultural diversity into the provision of patient care. The Registered Nurse contributes to the provision of quality nursing care through performance improvement techniques that demonstrate positive outcomes inpatient care. The RN provides care on a 24-hour basis including shift work and is an essential worker in periods of national or organizational disaster or emergencies.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (included but not limited to):

 

  1. Practices in accordance with the scope of nursing practice set out by the BVIHSA Nursing and Midwives Council
  2. Adhere to Nursing Professional Code of Conduct of Ethics
  3. Maintains current RN licensure, and relevant certifications and is responsible for keeping skill and knowledge level at an acceptable standard
  4. Perform effective and efficient triage of patients according to the Emergency Severity Index

                          i.            Initiates appropriate triage assessment, interventions, and protocols to improve patient outcomes and secure patient safety

                              ii.            Ensure reassessment of patients in the waiting area commensurate with their condition and waiting time frame

                            iii.            Provide patient and public education where appropriate to facilitate health promotion, injury prevention, and community

                             iv.            Act as a liaison with other health care professionals in expediting care to other areas of the department

  1. Provides quality and compassionate nursing care to all patients and families

                                I.            Conducts an individualized patient assessment and develop a plan of care based on organizational policy

                              ii.            Utilizes the Nursing Process to admit, plan and care for all patients

                            iii.            Assesses all patients at the start of shift, plans, and implement and evaluates patient care including discharge planning

                             iv.            Assumes responsibility for patients on the patient care units

                               v.            Delegates tasks to the Nursing Assistant as necessary

                             vi.            Monitors and documents patient’s responses to treatments and medications

                           vii.            Utilizes the holistic pattern in caring for patients

                         viii.            Reports on daily patient activities per shift. Provided regular status reports to the patient’s physician

                             ix.            The Emergency Nurse performs a critical function in resuscitative events and may be expected to lead the team in the absence of a physician

                               x.            Keeps abreast of changing techniques, adopts evidence-based practice, and maintains a high level of expertise in emergency care.

                             xi.            The Emergency Nurse maintains a state of readiness to respond to all emergent situation.

6. Adheres to all hospital and Nursing policies including administration and management of medications

i. Controls, secures and maintains legal records for Schedule I Dangerous Drugs.

ii. Maintains accurate records and reporting systems for continuing care, legal purposes, and ensures that all members of the health team are aware of patient-related matters

iii. Reconciles patient medication on discharge

 

  1. Controls the patient’s environment. Provides reports on durable equipment. Ensures quality checks on equipment.
  1. Requisitions and maintains equipment. Provide reports on durable equipment. Ensures quality checks on equipment.
  2. Maintains Unit stock and requisitions stores as required.
  3. Ensure the emergency supplies are stocked and Code carts sealed at all times.
  4. Ensure that all emergency/resuscitative equipment is ready for use.
  5. Responds appropriately to patient’s and family calls, requests, needs, inquiries, and to the request for other members of the Nursing tram
  6. Assesses the patient’s and family’s education needs and plans implements and evaluates teaching
  7. Coordinates patient care with other Hospital Units, external agencies, services and organizations, for continued care and other forms of assistance.
  8. Collaborates with other members of the Health Team to achieve the highest quality of care
  9. Collects and analyzes patient data to identify patient and family needs
  10. Refers patients and families to Community Health Services to ensure continuing Nursing Care after discharge from Hospital.
  11. Supervises all Junior and Unit based support staff in the delivery of patient care
  12. Assumes responsibility for all Nursing activities delegated to non-professional staff
  13. Participates in or initiates CPR and Codes when necessary
  1. Responsible for directing and coordinating all nursing care for patients based on established clinical nursing practice standards.
  1. Contributes to the hospital risk management and Quality Improvement programme

                       i.                    Submits reports on accidents, incidents, and such other occurrences to the Nursing Director, for risk management purposes.

                     ii.                              Refers patients and families to Community Health Services to ensure continuing Nursing Care after discharge from hospital

                   iii.                                Supervises all junior and unit-based support staff in the delivery of patient care

                    iv.                                Assumes responsibility for all nursing activities delegated to non-professional staff

  1. Participates in or initiates CPR and Codes when necessary

                    i.                     Maintains proper data management within the unit, and ensures that patient data is complete and updated in the Emergency Department Register

                  ii.                     Maintains professional competence by yearly assessment, self-directed learning and participation in continuing educational opportunities and by keeping up to date with current research

                iii.                     Serves as a service ambassador of the Dr. D. Orlando Smith Hospital in keeping with the mission and vision of the organization

                 iv.                     Serves on boards and unit committees as required.

  1. Responds promptly to institutional or other emergency calls requiring extra duty, mobilization of emergency systems, evacuation of patients or posting to other health stations or emergency command posts.
  2. Assumes leadership and managerial roles in the absence of the Nurse Manager as delegated
  3.  Contribute to performance Improvement projects on the unit to enhance delivery of patient care
  4. Performs other related duties which are consistent with the role profile and may be required in specialty units

Minimum REQUIREMENTS:

Educational/Training Requirements:

v  Diploma/Associate Degree/Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing

v  Certificate in Emergency Nursing (preferred, but not required)

v   

Experience:

v  Three (3) years in Nursing, with at least one year of Emergency Care experience.

 

Licenses/Certifications:

v  Registered and licensed with the General Nursing Council of the British Virgin Islands

v  Certificate in Hemodialysis Nursing BLS trained and certified

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

v  Sound knowledge of Basic Nursing and Nursing Code of Ethics.

v  Sound skill in the application of the Nursing Process to patient care

v  Sound skill is Triage Assessment and application of standardized criteria for triage levels/scoring

v  Ability to initiate systems Emergency responses.

v  Basic Phlebotomy skills

v  Sound critical thinking skills

v  Sound counseling skills

v  Sound human relation skills and team working skills

v  Sound oral and written communication skills

v  Knowledge of basic computer skills and information systems (training on HIS onsite)

 

Physical Demands:

The individual may be required to pull up or reposition patients in bed, lift supplies, place equipment on supports, push beds throughout the hospital, and perform external cardiac compressions. The individual must be able to bend over to perform certain duties, e.g. check chest tube drainage, check urinary output, etc. The individual must also be able to maneuver throughout halls, stairways, and patient rooms in response to hospital emergencies. Interpretation of environmental input requires visual and auditory skills. In the event there is a need to evacuate the building, heavy lifting will be required to carry patients to safety.

 

Work Environment:

Hospital Units including Emergency Room, Operating Room, Intensive Care Unit.
