Paramedic

The BVI Health Services Authority (a client-centered healthcare organization) invites qualified and professional applicants for the position of PARAMEDIC.  The EMT- Paramedic delivers emergency medical care in the field, ambulance, hospital, or clinic facility under the direction of the EMS Medical Director/Medical Control either under direct verbal control or written protocols.  Paramedics are also responsible for supervising shifts and managing problems arising during that time.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (included but not limited to):

  1. Receives dispatch information with specified complaints and directions.
  2. Performs the general duties of Paramedic in order of priority.
  3. Receives dispatch information with specified complaints and directions.
  4. Performs the general duties of EMT in order of priority.
  5. Informs the ER (doctors or supervisor on duty), Police or Fire Department according to the nature and appropriate communication or referral made.
  6. Observes patient and communicates condition en-route to emergency facility utilizing appropriate radio technique, administering care as indicated/directed by Medical Control.
  7. Prepares written and verbal reports indicating observations and care of patient at the scene and in transit, to the emergency room staff for diagnostic purposes and record keeping.  Completes all reports as per protocol.
  8. Notifies the appropriate authorities and arranges for protection of property and evidence at the scene.
  9. Maintains ambulance in proper operating condition including but not limited to: checking tire pressure, fuel, oil and water in the radiator.
  10. Collects Blood Specimens with correct labeling. (when applicable)
  11. Performs emergency respiration and cardiac intervention per protocol and scope of practice
  12. Assess and treat life threatening emergencies with appropriate pharmacological interventions.
  13. Performs 12 lead EKG in the field.
  14. Connects to patient defibrillator monitor and pacemaker equipment to monitor cardiac activity.
  15. Interprets12 lead strip and treat life threatening cardiac rhythms with the appropriate drugs.
  16. Establishes intravenous access and initiate fluid therapy.
  17. Ensures that the ambulance is equipped and properly stocked at all times.
  18. Performs and assists with resuscitation in the ER.
  19. Assist with patient care in Emergency Department.
  20. Any other relevant duties as assigned by the Supervisor from time to time.
  1. Performs inventory check of equipment of ambulance for every shift, restocks supplies used after every call, and reports discrepancies at once to the Supervisor of Emergency Medical Services for immediate replacement.
  2. Checks to determine that equipment is clean and operational.
  3. Renders care as authorized by certification and protocol including but not limited to:
    1. History and physical assessment/triage
    2. Basic life support
    3. Oxygen therapy
    4. Bandaging and splinting
    5. Control of bleeding and shock
    6. Emergency childbirth
    7. Basic intervention of medical and trauma emergencies
    8. Patient assistance, handling and transport
    9. Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

 

Minimum Requirements:

 

Education & Experience

 

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)
  • Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) Optional
  •  Neonatal Resuscitation Certificate Optional
  •  Pediatric Advances Life Support Certificate Optional
  •  Has a valid BVI driver’s license
  • Should have at least two years of patient care experience
  • Prior management experience is strongly encouraged, but not required
  • Experience in Microsoft Office, and general working knowledge of windows based programmes

 

Licenses and/or registrations

  •  Paramedic Certificates

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Expert knowledge in providing emergency medical care to patients during emergencies.
  • Expert knowledge in the use and care for emergency equipment such as suction machine, Obstetric kits, defibrillating systems, KED etc.
  • Professional knowledge of sanitizing and disinfections procedures.
  • Competent at driving an emergency vehicle at high speed in traffic.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all persons contacted during course of working.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent coping skills
  • Excellent ability to function under stress.
  • Ability to exercise considerable judgment in determining injury and establish priority in regional emergency care.
  • Ability to communicate verbally via telephone and radio equipment.
  • Strong organizational skills
  •  Ability to interpret written oral and diagnostic forms of instructions.
  •  Ability to use good judgment and remain calm in highly stressed situations.

 

Physical Demands

 

  • Highly stressed – mentally and physically conditions.
  • Greatly varying, high degree of stress throughout shift
  • The ability to lit and carry one hundred (100) pounds

 

Work Environment

 

  •  Post holder is expected to work within Ambulance, Hospital and Emergency Room setting
  • Exposed to communicable diseases, illnesses, pains and suffering.
  • Exposure to radiation.
  • Periodically forced to choose which patient to treat when confronted with multiple case. (triaging)
  • Drives emergency vehicle using lights and sirens to most calls
  • Driver’s license in defensive driving
  • The monitoring of anger, or emotional instability performance when exposed to physical devastations of other human beings such as contusions, fractures, dismemberment and death.

  

SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience
