Paralegal

A well-established Attorney at Law located in Kingston, is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Paralegal to join the legal team. The ideal candidate will have significant experience in probate law, conveyancing, modification of covenant, and adverse possession. This role requires a motivated individual who can provide comprehensive support to the attorney, manage legal documents, conduct research, and ensure that all legal processes are handled efficiently and in compliance with legal requirements.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Probate and Estate Management:
    • Draft and prepare probate applications, including wills, grants of probate, and letters of administration.
    • Conduct legal research and gather necessary documents for probate filings.
    • Assist in estate planning and management, including communication with beneficiaries and executors.
    • Handle resealing of probate and ensure compliance with relevant laws.
  2. Conveyancing:
    • Draft and review documents related to the sale, transfer, and registration of property, including sales agreements, transfer of titles, and mortgage documents.
    • Conduct title searches and due diligence checks to verify property ownership and resolve any encumbrances.
    • Prepare and file documents for land registration and follow up with government agencies.
    • Assist attorneys with all legal work related to property transactions and land ownership issues.
  3. Modification of Covenant:
    • Prepare and manage legal documents related to the modification and removal of covenants on land titles.
    • Conduct research and liaise with land registry offices and other relevant authorities to ensure compliance with covenant laws.
  4. Adverse Possession:
    • Assist attorneys in preparing and filing adverse possession claims.
    • Conduct in-depth legal research and gather evidence to support adverse possession cases.
    • Draft affidavits and supporting documentation for adverse possession applications.
  5. General Legal Support:
    • Prepare legal correspondence, affidavits, legal notices, and briefs.
    • Organize and maintain case files, ensuring all relevant documents are filed and up to date.
    • Provide support during court proceedings, including preparing trial documents, organizing exhibits, and coordinating schedules.
    • Assist attorneys with legal research, case preparation, and drafting pleadings and motions.
  6. Client Liaison:
    • Act as a point of contact for clients, providing updates and gathering necessary information.
    • Schedule meetings, manage client communications, and ensure that all deadlines and appointments are met.
    • Respond to client inquiries, providing timely and accurate information related to their cases.
  7. Administrative Duties:
    • Maintain and update case management databases, ensuring all legal documents are properly cataloged.
    • Monitor court deadlines and ensure that documents are submitted on time.
    • Assist with billing and preparing invoices for legal services rendered.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate Degree in Paralegal Studies or Bachelor of Laws (LLB) preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a paralegal, with specific experience in probate, conveyancing, and property law.
  • Strong knowledge of land law, probate law, and procedures related to adverse possession and covenant modifications.
  • Proficiency in conducting title searches, legal research, and preparing legal documents for property transactions.

  • Strong legal research and writing skills, with the ability to prepare detailed legal documents and correspondence.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to effectively interact with clients and legal professionals.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and legal document management software.
