The American University of Antigua College of Medicine is seeking to employ (Open Rank) Faculty Positions.   

Job Summary:

Founded in 2004, the American University of Antigua (AUA) is an innovative medical school dedicated to providing a learner-centric education of the highest quality, granting opportunities to underrepresented minorities, fostering a diverse academic community, and ensuring that its graduates develop the skills and attitudes of life-long learning, compassion, and professionalism. AUA invites applications from innovative and creative educators for full-time, teaching positions in organ systems-based Pre-Clinical Sciences in the MD program. These positions will be filled at the rank and title of Assistant or Associate Professor of the discipline that the candidate has a terminal degree in. The successful candidate will have a PhD, MD or equivalent degree in Physiology, Anatomy, Neuroscience, Pathology, Microbiology, Immunology, Pharmacology, Biochemistry Cell Biology & Genetics, Behavioral Science, or a related discipline. Alternatively, the candidate may have an MD degree with experience in teaching preclinical medical students. The incumbent would join a cadre of teaching faculty in the American University of Antigua College of Medicine and teach at the campus in Antigua.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and deliver teaching content incorporating evidence based pedagogical methods in his or her field using active learning techniques in the classroom and small group
  • Formulate learning outcomes aligned with assessments, small group activities, and other learning sessions
  • Design small group activities with clinically relevant context within a system-based curriculum that incorporates all the relevant basic science disciplines of anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, molecular science, pathology, and pharmacology
  • Collaborate with basic and clinical science educators to co-ordinate the inter-disciplinary collaboration with other discipline content within system-based courses
  • Contribute actively to developing formative assessments and summative assessments
  • Facilitating small group discussion based on integrated content
  • Lead as systems-based course director when required.
  • Implement effective remediation learning for students
  • Participate in curriculum development
  • Advising and mentoring students in academic, curricular, and living on the island
  • Other faculty duties as assigned by Chair or Dean
  • Additional academic duties may be assigned as determined by needs (extra teaching or facilitation of small groups when a colleague is indisposed)
  • Maintain office hours
  • Participate in faculty meetings
  • Actively participate in faculty development programs and attend scientific meetings at least once a year
  • Assume administrative duties including service on standing committees of the school either in an elected or an appointed capacity
  • Contribute to the local community through community outreach activities sponsored by the institution

Qualifications:

  • MD or PhD
  • A minimum of five years teaching experience in the pre-clinical curriculum at an accredited university
  • Experience with evidence based pedagogical principles of teaching and use of technology in teaching and learning
  • Demonstrate commitment to support the mission and vision of the university and diversity of students and faculty of the institution
  • Outstanding communication skills in writing, speaking, presenting and collaboration with students, faculty members and others
  • Demonstrate ability to interact professionally, and culturally sensitive
  • Ability to supervise, advise and train students and faculty members
  • Ability to advise and train remediating students
  • Ability to foster a co-operative work environment
  • Demonstrate skill to work independently, complete assignments under pressure of deadlines and competing priorities
  • Engage in scholarly activities as part of continuing education
  • Experience with Microsoft 365, particularly PowerPoint and Word is required
  • Experience with audience response systems is an advantage.
