Job Title: Nursing Officer

Reports to: Children Home Manager or designated officer

Job Summary

The incumbent will be required to engage in medication management, monitoring and health surveillance, immunization and the general care and treatment of children in a Community Residence.  The incumbent will be an integral part of the Care Team responsible for treatment plans.  Work is performed in accordance with established rules, regulations and standard practices of the profession.

 Main Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Secure and maintain records on doctor’s visits, sick children, referral etc.
  • Ensure confidentiality of all records.
  • Maintain and keep accurate personal medical history of each child.
  • Conduct preliminary examination of children who complain of illness and assess the need for a medical professional as necessary.
  • Liaise with and guide the relevant personnel with medical data to aid in developing treatment plans.
  • Dispense and collect medication as necessary.
  • Responsible for follow up on referrals made for clinical appointments (e.g. surgical, medical, eye, ENT and other clinics.
  • Maintain and update the vaccination programme records.
  • Address all clinical/medical emergencies.
  • Meet regularly with the Children Home Manager or Deputy Children Home Manager as required, reporting formally at least once bi-weekly and provide a monthly written report.
  • Manage a health education programme for children i.e. medical advice, personal hygiene as it applies to medication.
  • Check all dormitories on a daily basis, monitor hygiene generally and at individual level. Conduct housekeeping tours to ensure environmental sanitation is maintained.
  • Check on the medical supply.  Request /order supplies and equipment.
  • Performs related work as may be required.

 Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Must possess detailed knowledge of hospital nursing operations.
  • Must be proficient in written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to administer detailed therapeutic prescriptions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, and the public.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

  • Must be a Registered Nurse with 5+ years mental health experience.
  • Must satisfy the requirements for Registration with the Nursing Council of Trinidad and Tobago.
    • 5+ years of demonstrated successful leadership in an acute-care hospital environment.
