Nurse Manager (Women and Children Unit)

The BVI Health Services Authority (a client-centered healthcare organization) invites qualified and professional applicants to apply for the position of Nurse Manager (Women and Children Unit). The Nurse Manager is charged with the overall responsibility of ensuring that human and physical resources are organized and managed to facilitate the provision of quality patient and family centered care in the Dr. D Orlando Smith Hospital. The NM translates and models the mission, vision and values of the Authority at the unit level and is responsible for the day to day management and administration of the patient care units on a 24 hr continuum. The NM also provides relief general administrative coverage for the entire hospital and is responsible for the initiation of the Disaster Management Plan during these times.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (included but not limited to):

1) Manages Human Resources to ensure that there is adequate numbers and skill mix of staff to deliver quality care on the nursing units

i) Develop strategies and Performance improvement project for the Unit

ii) Develop strategic plan for the Unit

iii) Develop Unit Committees to execute performance project

iv) Prepares and submits drafts of unit’s work schedule and annual vacation plans to Nursing Director.

v) Prepares and submits monthly Staffing Schedules to the Nursing Director by the 20th of the month prior.

vi) Keeps accurate records of Public Holidays, days worked and vacations taken at the unit level and transfers to employee profile on a monthly basis in kronos.

vii)Identifies potential or actual staffing problems and implements/recommends solutions.

viii) Monitors punctuality and attendance, and submits monthly reports to the Nursing Director.

ix) Monitors staff performance and conducts quarterly reviews with each employee.

x) Recommends disciplinary measures concerning staff to the Nursing Director in writing

xi) Develops the supervisory capacity of staff through appropriate delegation to ensure professional and personal growth. xii)Supervises staff in delivery of care to assigned patients. Makes work assignments, assists with priority setting, and acts as a resource person for less experienced staff. Cultivates and nurtures a supportive and healthy unit culture.

xiii) Orients new staff to Nursing Unit and acts as Clinical Preceptor to newly assigned staff as required.

xiv) Collaborates with the Staff Development Educator and Clinical Nurse Specialist and others to meet educational and training needs of staff.

xv) Ensures that written and unit based guidelines are available to guide the staff in their work.

 

2) Manages assigned physical resources to ensure the delivery of quality care.

i) Conducts weekly Environment of Care Rounds, keeps documentation and reports variances to the maintenance unit and Nursing Director.

ii) Monitors and controls the medication and supply levels on the units to ensure efficiency, reduce wastage and ensure environmental safety

iii) Develops and implements mechanisms for the monitoring and control of all physical resources assigned to the unit including the establishment of maintenance plans in collaboration with facilities unit and the ordering of small equipment through the procurement officer.

iv) Identifies resource requirements and submits proposals to Nursing Director for the budget cycle.

 

 3) Implements strategies to monitor control and improve the Quality of care on the patient care units.

i) Documents and reports sentinel events to the Nursing Director and implements strategies to reduce further risk. ii)Ensures the standard of care delivered meets accepted authority standards and is evidence informed

iii) Establishes reviews and evaluates unit based improvement initiatives.

iv) Utilizes reports to identify risk factors and recommends corrective strategies, and formulates nursing policies to govern unit practice.

v)Evaluates the quality of care provided on the unit, identifies opportunities for improvement, and implement quality improvement projects at the unit level utilizing a team approach.

vi) Monitors patient satisfaction on the nursing units and implements strategies to enhance same.

 

4) Conducts and participates in administrative activities to ensure the communication of unit activities.

i) Submits monthly Unit Reports to Nursing Director according to Nursing Policy.

ii)Maintains unit based statistics, monitors, compiles and presents statistical data in reports and for research activities.

iii) Participates in Supervisory and Management meetings and patient care communities.

iv) Coordinates patient care with other unit and community agencies and collaborates with other services for continuity of care.

v)Demonstrates effective clinical leadership on the Nursing Units to promote staff and customer satisfaction.

vi) Schedules and conducts regular monthly unit based staff meetings.

vii)Resolves interpersonal/interdepartmental conflicts.

 

5) Ensures the units ability to respond to emergencies and assumes the Nursing lead in the absence of the Nursing Director or more senior administrator for the initiation of the disaster plan.

i) Implements strategies for the management of emergency supplies at the unit level including the readiness of the emergency cart.

ii)Initiates responses to internal and external disasters by activating the relevant disaster plan.

iii) Responds promptly to national and organizational emergencies by reporting for duty to organize unit activities.

iv) Ensures that each employee is familiar with their roles and responsibility in an organizational or national disaster.

 

6) Assumes leadership and managerial roles in the absence of the Nursing Care Coordinator or Nursing Director as delegated.

 

7) Performs other related duties which are consistent with the role profile and may be required in specialty units. 

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Educational/Training Requirements:

❖ Bachelors of Science Degree in Nursing

❖ Certificate/ Diploma in Management including human resource management

❖ Certification in Midwifery

 

Experience:

❖ Five (5) years nursing experience as a Registered Nurse with clinical experience in Midwifery.

 

Licenses/Certifications:

❖ Unencumbered BVI Nursing License and current registration to practice as a Nurse Midwife

❖ Acceptable certification in Unit Specialty

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

❖ Excellent leadership, organizational and management skills

❖ Excellent clinical practice and customer care skills

❖ Sound analytical and decision making skills

❖ Sound oral and written communication skills Computer literate with proficiency in word processing and database skills
