The Trinidad & Tobago Bureau of Standards (TTBS) is a body corporate governed by the Standards Act, No. 18 of 1997. It operates under the aegis of the Ministry of Trade and Industry with statutory responsibility for the quality of goods and services which are subject to trade in Trinidad & Tobago (with the exception of food, drugs, and cosmetics).
The primary role of TTBS is to develop, promote and enforce standards which will improve the quality of goods produced or used in Trinidad and Tobago. We also seek to ensure industrial efficiency and development; promote public and industrial welfare, health and safety; and protect the environment. TTBS’s main objective is to improve the quality of life in Trinidad and Tobago by ensuring that goods and services produced and/or used in the country satisfy criteria for good performance as established by the Bureau.
TTBS is also responsible for the implementation of the Metrology Act, No. 18 of 2004 which will lay the foundation for the modernization of measurement processes in Trinidad and Tobago. This law establishes the International Systems of Units as the National Unit System of Trinidad and Tobago; it also establishes National Measurement Standards and sets out rules for the verification of measuring devices and inspection of pre-packaged goods.
To fulfill its mandate TTBS has developed a number of services including Certification, Inspection, Laboratory Accreditation and a Standards Information Centre. Its ultimate goal remains “to be recognized and respected as a center of excellence for Standardization, Metrology, Quality, Testing and Training.”
