Medical Technologist

The BVI Health Services Authority (a client-centered healthcare organization) invites qualified and professional applicants for the position of Medical Technologist to efficiently and accurately perform specified laboratory tests to obtain data for use in diagnosis, progress and treatment of disease, using prescribed methodologies. The secondary job function is the maintenance of a quality management system in the laboratory.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (included but not limited to):

  1. Performs the prescribed testing procedures and calculates test findings in an accurate and timely manner in accordance with the current policy and procedure manual.
  2. Exercises independent judgment in determining the appropriate response to any procedural problem, the resolution of which is not covered by guidelines.
  3. Performs all procedures in a safe manner.
  4. Maintains competence in all areas of the laboratory for which they are authorized.
  5. Works on monthly rotation throughout all sections and oversees said sections.
  6. Prioritizes testing according to its urgency.
  7. Reviews all laboratory results and reports abnormal values to clients/clinicians.
  8. Ensures that all quality controls are carried out, reviewed and corrective action taken. Corrective action should be documented.
  9. Performs and documents scheduled preventative maintenance on laboratory equipment and analyzers and trouble shoot problems as required. Records corrective action.
  10. Be familiar with and accurately and consistently adhere to all hospital and departmental policies and procedure manuals.
  11. Carries out monthly inventory of laboratory supplies.

12.  Assists with student orientation and training of new staff and fellow technologists on new equipment and methods.

13.          Cleans bench and equipment as necessary.

14.    Performs phlebotomy duties for both inpatients, outpatient and donors (outside regular working hours)

15.          Answers incoming phone calls, prepare samples for shipping to referral labs.

16.          Performs any other duties as assigned by Laboratory Manager.

 

Minimum Requirements:

 

Education

v  Bachelors of Science in Medical Technology/Clinical Laboratory Science/Medical Laboratory Science

 

Experience

v  Two (2) years or more of relevant experience.

 

Licences & Certifications

v  Must be registered with the Allied Health Professionals Council

 

Knowledge, skills and abilities

v  Ability to work independently and exercise good problem solving and judgment

v  Must be well versed in all areas of clinical laboratory science

v  Must be courteous and well mannered

v  Must display strong interpersonal skills

v  Demonstrate good oral and written communication skills

v  Must be willing to continually upgrade skills and knowledge

v  Must be willing to work on shift and on call

v  Demonstrate proficiency in the operation of computer programs

SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
