MEDICAL OFFICER (PRIMARY HEALTH CARE)

The BVI Health Services Authority (a client-centered healthcare organization) invites qualified and professional applicants to apply for the position of Medical Officer (Primary Health Care) the primary responsibility of the Medical Officer is to provide preventative and curative medical care to persons in community, including domiciliary care and live-in government agencies. Participates in public health, chronic diseases and chronic infectious diseases programs. Participates in health education and promotion programs within the community. Participates in continuing professional development.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES (included but not limited to):

1.  Examines, investigates, diagnoses, and treats patients in response to presenting complaints and clinical history.

2.  Communicate diagnosis and management care plans with clients.

3.  Participate in comprehensive care through referring of clients to specialist, allied health providers and social agencies.

4.  Participate in health promotions and education programs with health care providers.

5.  Prescribe medications and therapies according to best practice and administer as appropriate.

6.  Manages and treats minor surgical conditions and medical emergencies.

7.  Documents medical and emergency management and care of clients including the production of medical reports as           required. 

8.  Participate in community profiling and surveillance of diseases.

9.  Documents and reports on communicable diseases.

10. Documents and reports child abuse.

11. Contributes to and takes part in training and development for members of the health team. This includes in service            training seminars, lectures, or attachments and writing protocols or procedures.

12. Perform any other related duties, consistent with the overall role profile that may be assigned by supervisors.

Minimum Requirements:

Educational/Training Requirements/Experience

• Medical Degree (MBBS/MD).
• Post graduate training (Diploma, MSc, DM or equivalent) in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics and/or Public Health (additive)
• Successful completion of internship consisting of minimum of three (3) months in Internal Medicine, General Surgery and Obstetrics and Gynecology.
• Minimum of three (3) years of clinical practice as a Senior House Officer with a minimum of six (6) months in Internal Medicine or Emergency Medicine of Family Medicine

 Licenses/Certifications

• Registered with the Medical Council in the country of origin.
• Registered with the Medical Council of the British Virgin Islands
• BLS and or ACLS, PALS, NALS
• Driver’s License

Knowledge, skills and abilities

• Sound knowledge and competence in best practice general/family medicine (internal, family, pediatric, surgery) and ability to work unsupervised.
• Ability to work as part of a team as well as unsupervised with other health professionals.
• Sound oral and written communication skills.
• Sound human relation skills.
• Basic computer skills.

 Physical Demands

• The physical demands are minimal and typical of similar jobs in comparable organizations.
• On-call duties within the community.
• Travel to different clinics within the BVIHSA community and provide domiciliary care.
