Medical Laboratory Technician

Job Title: Medical Laboratory Technician  

Role Overview:

To lead and oversee the efficient, compliant, and profitable operation of the medical laboratory by managing staff, ensuring equipment reliability, optimizing inventory, and implementing strategies that enhance customer satisfaction and drive business growth.

 

Role Description:

Laboratory Operations Management

  • Supervise daily laboratory operations to ensure seamless and effective functioning.
  • Implement and enforce Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to maintain quality and consistency.
  • Ensure strict compliance with regulatory standards and health and safety protocols.
  • Conduct regular internal audits to sustain high standards of quality and operational efficiency.

Inventory and Equipment Management

  • Monitor and maintain optimal inventory levels to avoid shortages or overstocking.
  • Source cost-effective suppliers for consumables and equipment while maintaining quality standards.
  • Ensure timely maintenance and calibration of all laboratory equipment, minimizing downtime.
  • Recommend and execute upgrades or replacements for outdated equipment to enhance efficiency.

Staff Recruitment and Development

  • Recruit, onboard, and manage laboratory staff to build a high-performing team.
  • Develop and oversee staff schedules to balance workloads and ensure productivity.
  • Provide ongoing training, conduct performance evaluations, and foster a culture of continuous improvement.

Business Development and Marketing

  • Develop competitive service packages and offers to attract and retain customers.
  • Collaborate with the marketing team to create effective promotional campaigns.
  • Monitor market trends and customer needs to identify and act on growth opportunities.

Financial Management and Strategic Planning

  • Prepare and manage the laboratory’s budget, ensuring alignment with financial goals.
  • Analyze expenses and revenue to identify areas for cost reduction and profit maximization.
  • Develop and implement strategies to enhance lab efficiency, profitability, and competitiveness.
  • Monitor and report Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to senior management.

 

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology from a recognized institution OR
  • BSc. in Medical Laboratory Technology from a recognized institution.
  • Three (3) years to Five (5) years of previous work experience in a similar role.
  • Current Registration with the Council of Profession Related to Medicine: Medical Laboratory Technicians Board of Trinidad and Tobago (MLTBTT) will be an asset.
  • Any equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Extensive knowledge of current laboratory procedures and use of laboratory equipment.
  • Extensive knowledge of medical laboratory quality control and safety procedures
  • Knowledge of lab accreditation standards.
  • Knowledge of supervisory management
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of patients’ information.
