The Department of Health Services invites suitably qualified applicants to apply for the position of Medical Doctor – Obstetrician Gynaecologist.
MANDATE
An Obstetrician Gynaecologist (OB/GYN) is a medical doctor specializing in women's reproductive health, including pregnancy, childbirth, and disorders of the reproductive system. The mandate of an OB/GYN is to provide comprehensive medical care to women throughout all stages of their lives, from adolescence through menopause and beyond.
The OB/GYN is also expected to assist in the formulation of policies, guidelines and protocols relative to evidence-based, high quality, patient centred care.
KEY FUNCTIONS
Provide routine medical services in accordance with legal and statutory requirements and for the enhancement of primary, secondary and tertiary levels of health care
Practice medicine with the highest ethical standards, ensuring patient confidentiality, informed consent, and respect for patient autonomy.
- Provide prenatal care to pregnant women, including monitoring fetal development and maternal health.
- Manage labor and delivery, ensuring safe childbirth outcomes for both mother and baby.
- Diagnose and treat disorders of the female reproductive system, such as menstrual disorders, infertility, gynecological cancers and others.
- Perform surgical procedures related to the reproductive organs, including hysterectomies, ovarian surgeries, and laparoscopic procedures.
- Offer preventive care, routine screenings (e.g., Pap smears), and health maintenance for women.
- Educate patients on reproductive health, family planning options, and preventive measures.
KEY DUTIES ( A Few
- Admit, conduct patient assessments and discharge inpatients as required.
- Formulate and prescribe specialized health care regimens for designated patients.
- Conduct prenatal examinations, ultrasounds, and screenings to monitor fetal development and maternal health.
- Provide guidance on nutrition, exercise, and prenatal vitamins for expectant mothers.
- Manage labor, childbirth, and postpartum care, including performing deliveries and addressing any complications.
- Perform pelvic exams, Pap smears, and other diagnostic tests to assess reproductive health
- Diagnose and treat gynecological conditions such as endometriosis, fibroids, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
- Perform surgeries and procedures related to obstetrics and gynecology, including cesarean sections, hysterectomies, and laparoscopic surgeries.
- Provide contraceptive counseling and family planning services, including insertion of intrauterine devices (IUDs) and contraceptive implants.
- Manage menopausal symptoms and provide hormone replacement therapy when indicated.
- Screen for gynecological cancers (e.g., cervical, ovarian, uterine) and coordinate treatment plans when necessary.
- Meet with patients and their families to discuss diagnoses, treatment options, and prognoses.
- Prepare patients for surgery, including pre-operative assessments and discussions about the procedure, risks and expected outcomes, obtaining informed consent prior to the procedure.
- Ensure sterile and safe surgical environments, adhering to hospital, DHS, accepted and regulatory standards.
- Provide post-operative care, monitor recovery, manage pain, and address potential complications.
- Ensure accurate, complete and timely documentation of surgical and non-surgical findings, management, progress, follow-up plans, and patient and caregiver interactions in electronic health records, medical reports and other required versions of the patient record.
- Coordinate referrals to other specialists, sub-specialists and/or tertiary health care institutions as required.
- Adhere to hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements, ensuring compliance with medical standards and protocols.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient care and patient safety.
- Stay current with advancements in medical knowledge through continuing medical education (CME).
- Perform other related duties as required by the job function.

SCOPE OF THE JOB
Primarily clinical with some administrative duties as required.
The Obstetrician/Gynaecologist will be required to work in a variety of settings, including the Princess Alexandra Hospital, clinics and other locations designated for the fulfilling of community outreach programmes, performing the duties so outlined in this job description and other appropriate functions and duties assigned by the DHS management.
The role requires frequent standing, moving, and handling of instruments related to labour and surgical procedures, exposure to potentially infectious materials and the need to adhere to strict sterilization protocols.
PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS
The incumbent must possess sound knowledge of operations, practices, procedures, standards, specifications and work methods, interpersonal communication, computer skills, communicative, analytical and diagnostic ability and interpretative judgment.
Such knowledge, skills and abilities are normally obtained through the acquisition of a Specialist Medical Degree or Medical Degree plus Board certified specialty. Applicant should have three (3) years post qualification experience in a similar or related job.
