JOB SUMMARY
MECHANIC A
To assist in the achievement of the company’s objectives by carrying out repairs and maintenance to all mobile equipment to ensure that specifications are met.
SKILL
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
• | (2) CXCs mathematics and English (or equivalent qualifications). |
• | Computer literate. |
• | Secondary school graduate or equivalent qualification. |
• | Certification from a vocational school or trade school is preferred. |
• | A minimum of 3 years’ experience in a similar role. |
LEARNED DISCIPLINES, SPECIALIZED TECHNIQUES AND SKILLS
• | Valid Driver’s License |
• | In-depth knowledge of vehicle diagnostic equipment and mechanical systems. |
• | Strong attention to detail, mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills |
• | Excellent written and communication skills. |
TYPES OF EQUIPMENT USED:
- General hand tools
- Micrometer
- Depth gauges
- Tachometer
GENERAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
The jobholder would be exposed to dust, noise, grease and oil.
SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:
Must wear safety boots, helmet, gloves and coverall on duty.
AUTHORITIES/ACCOUNTABILITY:
A high degree of self-supervision is required.
Responsible for all tools and equipment used.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES – Mechanic “A” – Workshop
- Examines service reports and discuss the problems with the Workshop Manager.
- Repairs automobile and diesel equipment according to the manufacturer’s specifications.
- Diagnoses problems by operating equipment used in the department.
- Ensures performance of outlined tasks to match existing preventative checklist sheets.
- Informs superiors of relevant information concerning spare parts.
- Ensures that all jobs are done in accordance with maintenance manuals and set standards.
- Carries out all aspects of maintenance and improvement work in an efficient and costeffective manner while ensuring that quality standards are met.
- Receives materials from stores according to requisitions given by superiors.
- Secures all tools, materials, and spares during any job process.
- Make suggestions pertaining to job improvements and safety as necessary.
- Assists fellow workers when difficulties arise.
- Cleans all equipment and machinery before any job is handed over to user.
- Reports defects on equipment and machinery to the Workshop Manager.
- Complies with all safety policies and procedures.
- Troubleshoots and diagnoses problems as required.
- Inspects and monitors all mobile equipment.
- Supervises the work of direct reports, casual labourers and contractors as required.
- Carries out special checks on equipment - alignment, vibration monitoring, etc.
- Perform other duties of similar nature or level when called upon to do so.

PERFORMANCE CRITERIA
This job is satisfactorily performed when:
- Equipment downtime is kept to a minimum.
- Services and parts are ordered in a timely manner.
- Workshop defect reports are completed within three days of repairs being completed.
- Repairs are be done according to manufacturer’s specification.
- Compliance with set standards is maintained.
