Legal Clerk

Job Title: Legal Clerk

The incumbent is responsible for drafting and perfecting legal documents, attending court proceedings, mediation, and insolvency hearings to effectively manage the debt portfolio of the organization.

Summary of major Job Duties and responsibilities:

  • The candidate will prepare, amend, and interpret legal documents for review.
  • Review all legal documents for Loan processing Unit and Securities
  • Draft legal documents including briefs, pleadings, appeals, agreements, contracts, and legal memoranda.
  • Help with trial preparation including witness lists, exhibits and trial binders.
  • Generate reports as requested from Assistant Collections Manager, Collections Manager or General Manager from our Loan Management Systems.
  • Developi effective communication skills which are conducive to ensuring customer and office requirements are satisfied in a courteous and responsive manner
  • Acquire and maintain a sound knowledge of lending Policies and Procedures to support the timely and appropriate response to customers
  • Research regulatory issues and monitoring laws and policies in connection with Micro Finance transactional and collection matters.
  • Reporting any unusual occurrence or fraudulent activity to the Assistant Collection Manager who will then escalate to Collections Manager
  • Acting on behalf of the Company in all civil proceedings relative to the recovery of outstanding debts by:
  1. Preparing plaints/summons
  2. Filing of plaints/summons
  3. Assisting with serving of plaints/summons by working closely with bailiff
  4. Attend the relevant court proceedings.

  Required Skills/Competencies:

  • A thorough knowledge of the Company’s Collection policies and procedures with proven skills to optimize collection effectiveness.
  • A sound knowledge of the products and services
  • Excellent Researching skills
  • Knowledge of Contract Law, Commercial Law, and Company Law                                                                                
  • A sound knowledge of the Company’s Policies and Operating Procedures.
  • Experience in Court Preceedings.

 Qualifications:

  • Paralegal certificate or Associate Degree in the related discipline
  • A minimum of three (3) years related work experience
  • Knowledge of Company Law, Commercial Law and Contract Law
  • Sound writing skills in collection related correspondence, must be presented in an informative, concise and professional format.
  • Must have effective time management skills in order to prioritize, motivate and organize using the ability to deal with varied tasks and situations on an ongoing basis
  • Very good negotiation and analytical skills in order to coordinate and present alternatives to customers.
