The successful candidate shall assist the Manager, Legal Services in all legal issues and matters relating to the Corporation’s business. He/She will represent the Corporation in civil litigation and other legal proceedings, develop legal documents and/or advise on legal transactions.

Applications are invited from nationals of Trinidad and Tobago to fill the position of “Legal Counsel” at the Point Lisas Industrial Port Development Corporation Limited.


JOB PURPOSE

The successful candidate shall assist the Manager, Legal Services in all legal issues and matters relating to the Corporation's business. He/She will represent the Corporation in civil litigation and other legal proceedings, develop legal documents and/or advise on legal transactions.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Responsible for drafting, reviewing and negotiating all legal documents relating to the operations of the organization.

Represents the Corporation on legal matters.

Appears as a Representative of the Corporation as Instructing Attorney-at-Law or Counsel in Litigation matters.

Represents the Legal Services Department in Internal Tribunals.

Provides assistance in negotiating settlements of disputes as and when required.

Prepares legal briefs and opinions and files appeals as required

Gives sound advice on complex legal matters.

Performs any other relevant duties that may be requested by Management, to ensure successful completion of the job functions.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

Education/Training:     

Possession of Bachelor of Law (LLB) Degree.

Possession of Legal Education Certificate or equivalent.

The degree must be from an Accredited Institution.

 

Experience:                     

Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in the Corporate Environment or in practice.

A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in conveyancing and drafting contracts and leases will be an asset.

 

Certification and Licences:

Certificate of Good Character dated within six (6) months.

 

Required Testing:   

The successful candidate will be required to undergo the following:

  • A full Medical Examination (inclusive of substance testing) to establish fitness for the position.
  • Required to undergo a Psychometric Assessment.

 

Physical Requirements:

Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

Maybe required to operate in the external environment on occasion.

Maybe required to wear and work in Personal Protective Equipment on occasion.

Occasionally moves and files bundles of documents.

Repeating motions that may involve wrists, hand or fingers.

 

Knowledge:                   

Demonstrates knowledge of Company Law, Land Law, Contract Law, Insurance Law, Industrial Relations/Employment Law, Maritime Law and Environmental Law.

Knowledge of legal drafting principles and practices, legal research skills and techniques

Understanding of relevant legislation, statutory regulations, HRIS and ISO 9000 standards.

 

Skills:

Strong analytical, problem-solving, and time management skills. Must possess a high degree of focus for accuracy and a keen eye for detail in a challenging environment with strict deadlines.  Good interpersonal and negotiation skills. Adaptable and capable of working in a fast-paced environment.

 

Abilities:

Reliable, dependable and responsible to fulfil obligations.  Must possess a demonstrated sense of integrity and confidentiality.
