Duties and responsibilities:

 

This is an entry-level, professional position designed to provide substantive contribution to a specific project and/or activities in the fulfillment of the mission of its designated Department/Secretariat and is assigned all or part of the following responsibilities. (NOTE: these responsibilities and expected results are standardized, and are not necessarily performed by all staff members sharing this job title):

  •        Compiling general background information from readily available sources, on economic and social factors for an assigned sector, area or country: designing and drafting, supporting flow charts, schedules, graphs and tables; coordinating the collection and verification of documents, actions and data with substantive or support units assembling; and editing basic data required for planning and negotiation, in format dictated by agenda or supervisor's instructions checking project documents for clarity, consistency and completeness;

  •        Describing progress of ongoing projects, investigating designated project activities, discussing findings with supervisor to identify implications for the work of the unit, discussing rationale and context of project activities, considering the alternative methods for project design, management, problem identification and problem resolution; maintaining institutional memories or other documentation systems to record program and project history and ongoing activities.

  •        Arranging briefings, tours, and related activities for visitors, missions and fellowship holders.

  •        Provide support in the development and strengthening of relations with key institutions and organizations working in the field of department/section-specific activities and mission (e.g. projects, cases, initiatives), including but not limited to: the organization and coordination of meetings, conferences, presentations, events and seminars; following-up on the development of joint activities at the local and regional levels, researching information and drafting reports.

  •        Research and synthesize information, participating in the elaboration of publications documenting the work of the department towards facilitating the systematization of methodologies and conceptual frameworks and their dissemination among scholars, practitioners and other interested parties.

  •        Support the organization of fact-finding and needs assessment.

  •        Participate in the formulation and execution of projects, programs, activities and events related to the area of work.

  •        Support the execution and accounts of assigned activities and projects, processing and following-up on administrative and financial actions, including assisting in hiring human resources, purchasing equipment and supplies, travel arrangements, etc.

  •        Support and participate in various initiatives in furtherance of department/section-specific activities and mission; including, but not limited to, drafting, reviewing and editing for consistency and language, correspondence, reports, proposals and joint proposals, budgets, financial reports, work plans, and documents and publications, researching information, as well as maintaining various databases relating to departmental activities.

  •        Research and identify potential training seminars and other programs, obtaining information regarding their requirements, operations and procedures, drafting proposals and following-up on such, as appropriate.

  •        As required, provide support in the planning, fundraising, implementation and evaluation of missions, programs, projects and activities at Headquarters and in the field, e.g. preparing/ ensuring the preparation of documentation and logistical arrangements for personnel traveling from/to country projects and programs.

  •        Actively engage in the Performance Evaluation System: Provide leadership, guidance, coaching, and motivation to staff by regularly discussing performance and providing feedback; solve interpersonal conflicts; actively support the development and career aspirations of staff; evaluate performance fairly. Also, staff member should establish work expectations with the direct supervisor by defining individual annual objectives.

  •        Perform other related duties as assigned, including replacing and backstopping for others.

 

qualifications:

 

Education & Experience:  
 

Essential: First University Degree in political and social sciences, law, international relations, business administration, economics, and engineering or related field AND 1 year of relevant experience including internship(s) in similar positions at national and/or international level.

 

Desirable: Experience or knowledge of the OAS mandates and priorities as related to the area of work and/or the dynamics of the Inter-American agenda and system. 

 

COMPUTER SKILLS:

Ability to effectively work using Microsoft Office (e.g. Outlook, Word, and Excel), and other software applicable to the area of work.

 

LANGUAGES:

  • Essential – Proficient in at least two of the following languages: English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish (read, write and communicate).

  • Desirable – Working knowledge of other two OAS official languages.

- Compensation: 
Professional Category: Remuneration = Basic Salary + Post Adjustment 
Net of taxes for non-US citizens  

- US citizens tax reimbursement: US Citizens are reimbursed for most taxes paid on OAS remuneration.   

- Paid Annual Leave: 21 days from 1st year.  Increase to 30 days within 5 years.  

- Sick Leave and Parental Leave. 

- Health Insurance: OAS pays 2/3 of premium. 

- Pension and Savings Plans: In addition to salary, OAS contributes 14% of pensionable remuneration to a Retirement and Pension Plan. Staff contribute 7%. 

- Additional benefits (dependent on contract type): Mobilization allowance, repatriation grant, language allowance home leave travel, dependency allowance, life insurance.
