The Rigger/Slinger/Load Handler is responsible to sling loads for lifting, packing and any other task identified by the Chargehands/Checkers.
Roles & Responsibilities
General
• Ensure slings are not wrapped around sharp corners without suitable packing materials or shortened using knots or attached to a fitting that is smaller than sling rope in diameter.
• Stand clear while a load is lifted clear of the ground and landed, while slack is taken up with or without a load on the hook and must confirm to the Banksman/Signaler that he is clear.
• Control the load in the air using tag lines/push pull poles where appropriate.
• Knowledge on how to attach cables or ropes to the load. That includes knowing the right hitches to tie, and the load they can support safely.
• Knowledge and understanding of figuring out where the center of gravity has to be on a load to keep everything stable.
• Knowledge on the use of different types of rigging equipment such as slings, shackles, chokers and banding straps.
• Recognize any hazards associated with a lifting and moving job.
• Clean up and store all rigging equipment after use.
• Not touch a load being landed or attempt to manually stop a swinging load.
• Must not handle a load under any circumstances, unless below waist height
• Be easily identifiable and distinct from the Banksman/Signaller.
• Keep uninvolved personnel clear of the suspended load.
• Assist in the co-ordination and processing of all crane lifting operations.
• Assist in the transportation and logistics of lifting equipment.
• Responsible for ensuring that all equipment used is in compliance with legislation.
• Participate in and contribute to the day-to-day interface between lifting operations and any other affected areas.
• Assist with management and audits.
• Assist in accurate control and tracking of all lifting equipment.
• Contribute to expected company behaviors.
• Assist in maintaining a safe place of work
• Participate in and contribute to safety meetings and toolbox talks
• Follow all instructions (verbal or written) given by the Chargehand/Checker pertaining to Lifting operations or associated activities
• Assist with the planning of lifting operations
• Responsible for the cleanliness of the lifting operations/deck areas
• Assist with the loading/unloading of containers and cargo handling
• To assist in any activity once requested by Chargehands/Checkers or Shorebase Team Lead
• Must be onsite at all times during lifting operations or any operations that requires your assistance.

• 5 CXC passes including Mathematics and English

• Knowing personal limitations regarding work skills and knowledge
• Previous experience working on ASCO sites will be an asset
• Clean Certificate of Character
Technical Competencies
• NSL Banksman/Slinger Competency Assessment
• Knowledge of regional legislation
• Knowledge of lifting operations planning.
• Personnel should be trained and assessed to industry recognised standards that comply with or are equivalent to industry recognised standards.
• Company internal competence standards have been produced as part of the overall training and competence programmes.
HSEQ
• In partnership with the HSE department, ensure the continuous improvement of safety and environmental performance and compliance to all laws, regulations and industry standards/codes.
• Reports all incidents or breaches of policy or regulations to the line manager.
• Fully endorse the ASCO ‘Stop the Job’ policy and commitment to proactive intervention where an unsafe act or condition is observed.
• Adherence to the ASCO’s integrated management system ensuring document control and improvements to key processes is maintained.
• Ensure all work is carried out in a safe manner, always complies with HSEQ procedures, GLP, working instructions and safety standards.
