Health, Safety and Environment Assistant

The HSE Assistant is accountable for providing general assistance in the implementation, monitoring and reviewing of NFM’s Health, Safety, and Environmental programme.  The HSE Assistant will also provide support for the management of pest control, janitorial and waste management services for the Company.

 

Key Accountabilities

  • Conducts risk assessments, sanitation inspections, pest control and environmental audits and produces detailed reports with technical advice.
  • Continuously monitors HSE contractors (pest control, janitorial, waste disposal, safety) and inspects machinery and personnel to ensure the safest systems of work and equipment are being employed.
  • Conducts safety training and advise on relevant training needs as it relates to Health, Safety, Security and Environment issues.
  • Assists in supplier review for all HSE contractors (pest control and janitorial).
  • Assists and guides employees in incident prevention and addressing accidents.
  • Assists with the development of SOP’s and Work Instructions.
  • Inspects and ensures that the Company’s firefighting equipment and safety measures are fully operational.
  • Designs and executes safety training programmes for designated staff.
  • Oversees the disposal of chemicals and waste.
  • Coordinates the activities of the company’s safety warden team and safety warden team training.
  • Assists in developing and collating HSE Monthly Reports.
  • Conducts Accident and Incident investigations and reviews.
  • Assists in acquiring all relevant statutory certifications.
  • Performs any other duties related to and compatible with the position.

 

Basic Requirements

  • A Diploma or Associate Degree in Occupational Health and Safety from a recognized institution.                         A First Degree in HSE or Business is desirable.
  • At least three (3) years experience in an HSE role.
  • Good communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Well organized and structured, attention to detail, able to prioritize and deal with multitasking.
  • Must be confidential and trustworthy, demonstrate integrity and sound judgment.
  • Good time management skills with ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced quickly changing environment.
  • Proficient in the use of computers, particularly with Microsoft Office.
