This position is responsible for providing technical and non-technical assistance to the Power System Controller in ensuring the safe, reliable and cost effective operation of the power delivery system.

POSITION SUMMARY/OVERVIEW 

This position is responsible for providing technical and non-technical assistance to the Power System Controller in ensuring the safe, reliable and cost effective operation of the power delivery system. The incumbent also assists the Power System Controller in keeping an accurate and up-to-date time log of the system operations on each shift. 

EDUCATION/SPECIALIZED TECHNIQUES & EXPERIENCE 

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent discipline
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in a System Control environment would be an asset
  • Certification in Advanced Power Application Packages. 
  • Certified authority to switch locally & remotely in electrical power systems. 
  • Knowledge of system restoration policies and practices. 
  • Training in power system analysis and principles.
  • Sound knowledge of power system theory, understanding and familiarity with power system operations, practices and standards.  

MAJOR TASKS/DUTIES 

  1. Operate and monitor all Control Room systems, documents activities, and operate the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system (SCADA). 
  2. Operate our state-of-the-art MONARCH energy management system (EMS) and advanced distribution management system (ADMS) perform system studies such as Power flow analysis, Contingency analyses, Optimal Power flow etc. 
  3. Assist in network restoration, reporting and post-event analyses of system disturbances. 
  4. Prepare switching orders, direct field personnel and coordinate switching for planned and emergency outages. 
  5. Respond to power system events at various voltage levels using sound analytical skills, sound judgment and taking corrective action. 
  6. Complete required internal and external training requirements, including T&D familiarization, switching authorization, certifications etc. 
  7. Call out and co-ordinates switching personnel for planned outages, load shedding/restoration of faults or fault outages to minimize customer outages  
  8. Directs and co-ordinates resource personnel to rectify abnormal system conditions  
  9. Keeps Corporate Communication abreast of fault outages affecting customers  
  10. Organizes and co-ordinates field teams to correct electrical equipment defects  
  11. Maintains system parameters within specified limits  
  12. Identifies and analyzes alarms and takes appropriate action  
  13. Updates distribution system diagrams during/after system familiarization
