OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH OFFICER I – TOBAGO DEPOT
JOB SUMMARY:
The Occupational Safety and Health Officer I is responsible for implementing the Corporation’s Occupational Health and Safety Management System by providing technical advice and assistance to Area Supervisors, Managers and employees on conditions affecting or impacting on Occupational Safety and Health.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversees and coordinates emergency service activities including developing, implementing and maintaining the Corporation’s emergency preparedness and disaster relief programmes during critical events, crises and disasters
- Develops and conducts emergency management training sessions and emergency evacuation and disaster drills
- Coordinates periodic tests of the emergency evacuation system
- Facilitates fire-safety training programmes, including the theoretical and practical applications of various types of fire-extinguishing equipment for management and staff
- Provides technical assistance and facilitates training sessions relative to the theoretical and practical applications of First-Aid and CPR
- Recommends the appropriate fire-detection systems, fire alarm systems, and fire-extinguishing devices that are critical to the protection of the Corporation’s buildings and assets
- Identifies potential fire hazards in buildings and recommends appropriate corrective actions
- Makes recommendations based on research, on fire retardant materials that are essential for use in infrastructure works
- Provides technical advice and assistance to area supervisors, managers and employees on conditions affecting or impacting on occupational safety and health
- Collects and maintains data on health, safety and environmental issues in the assigned depot/area, including accidents and “near misses” in order to prepare reports and make recommendations
- Reviews work methods and processes within the workplace and makes recommendations to minimize or remove hazards to Occupational Health, Safety and the Environment
- Investigates and reports on accidents in the workplace and recommends corrective action
- Assists in the development and institutionalizing of a safety culture in which safety is viewed as a priority and where continuous improvement is encouraged
- Coordinates assigned Health and Safety projects
- Conduct health and safety audits
- Conducts investigations into accidents and incidents as requested
- Performs other related duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Manager- Occupational Safety and Health
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Associate Degree in Occupational Safety and Health.
- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety laws and best practices.
- A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in a similar position or related field
REQUIRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Report writing skills.
- Teamwork, professionalism and interpersonal skills.
- Planning and Coordination skills.
- Knowledge of MS Office Suite
- Ability to operate equipment used in various aspects of Occupational Health and Safety testing.
