Our Client, NIDCO, is seeking to recruit a Chief Engineer to join their Maritime Services Department. This position is offered as a three (3) year renewable contract.

JOB SUMMARY

The Chief Engineer is responsible for the maintenance, preservation, operation and readiness of the ship’s propulsion machinery, mechanical and electrical systems, and damage control equipment. He/she is in charge of the management of shipboard engineering systems and equipment, the day-to-day activities of the engineering crew, and is responsible for representing, enforcing, and preserving Company interests, policies and procedures to the crew, clients, sub-contractors, and duly authorized authorities as directed by the Master. The individual shall safely maintain all the vessel’s systems to specifications as determined by the equipment manufacturers.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintains and operates the vessel systems within legal requirements of pertinent regulatory agencies and manufacturer’s manuals.
  • Ensures the safe and efficient  maintenance and operation of the vessel’s engineering systems and spaces including, but not limited to, main propulsion, power generation and management systems, vessel control systems, automation systems, dry bulk and liquid cargo transfer systems, fuel management systems, bilge and ballast systems; firefighting systems , refrigeration and HVAC systems; potable water, grey water and sewage systems, communication and electronic navigation systems deck machinery and cranes.
  • Manages all below deck cargoes and engineering stores; tracks and reports on the consumption of fuel, water, lube oils, hydraulic oils and engineering spare parts and supplies
  • Responsible for the monitoring of the seaworthiness of the vessel, the safety of the crew and persons in addition to crew, protection of the environment, training and other responsibilities that may be assigned by the Master or that recognizes as essential to his/or her responsibility.
  • The Chief Engineer manages the engineering officers, engineering crew, QMED, vendors and subcontractors as directed by the Master, including service delivery, safety management, human resource management and cost management in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Company.
  • The Chief Engineer is accountable to the Maintenance Manager, and reports to the Master of the vessel, for all aspects of job performance. He/she shall manage the engineering officers and engineering crew aboard his/her vessel under the direction of the Master.
  • As a key member of the Vessel Management Team, the Chief Engineer is to ensure adherence to all Company operational guidelines and planned maintenance programs, and manage all Engineering Department personnel in their daily duties following Marpol guidelines and Solas codes.
  • Ensures proper operations of control, monitoring and alarm components and systems.
  • Notifies the Captain and Maintenance Manager immediately of any abnormal changes in the status of machinery operation.
  • Performs safe and effective voyage repairs with limited resources and outside support, while working under tight time constraints and in remote geographical locations.
  • Troubleshoots machinery malfunctions as required and effectively communicates directly with the Captain and Maintenance Manager and designated shore-side support staff and vendors, to provide timely and relevant information for the diagnoses and repair of vessel machinery and systems.
  • Responsible for vessel bunkering operations, ensuring compliance with established fuelling procedures.
  • Checks and maintains fuel/fluid levels in all tanks within the vessel, takes monthly oil samples for analysis.
  • Maintains adequate critical spares and general vessel parts inventory levels.
  • Trains junior Engineering staff in Company policies, vessel operations, equipment repair and preventative maintenance procedures.
  • Works as assigned by the Maintenance Manager for the safe and effective management of shipyard personnel and other vendors, during planned and emergent maintenance and repair periods
  • Troubleshoots and repairs all engines, pumps, machinery, and electrical components
  • Ensures proper implementation of maintenance schedules for all engineering equipment
  • Maintains proper markings, tags and colour coding of various systems
  • Inspects, monitors and checks system parameters of all auxiliary systems and machinery. Checks operating procedures, temperatures, pressures, and fluid levels
  • Maintains or ensures cleanliness of engineering spaces
  • Responsible for monthly engineering reports to be submitted to management
  • Responsible for proper maintenance of onboard alarms and safety systems
  • Responsible for safety of personnel in engine room Supervisory and Leadership of Direct Staff
  • Reads/interprets technical data, specifications, and drawings
  • Basic Knowledge of welding and burning procedures and hot work safety precautions
  • Prepares the engine room for inspection by auditor and local marine/safety authorities
  • Manages and executes Risk Management Plan
  • Confers with Captain and management to determine engineering cost effectiveness, equipment extension of services, and up-time performance.
  • Performs duties of a Deckhand when directed by the Captain or Mate during vessel operation
  • Supervise repairs to ensure that they are performed in accordance with specifications and standards
  • Complete Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and or Activity Hazard Analysis (AHA)
  • Performs, documents and updates when necessary, the preventative maintenance program for propulsion and power generation engines.
  • Logs all maintenance and repairs in an electronic maintenance tracking program.
  • Monitors and records operating condition of engine room equipment
  • Maintains daily, weekly and monthly logs with proper readings and times.
  • Performs all the functions outlined in the preventative maintenance system.
  • Participates in the safe operation of the vessel as required by the IMO (via the vessel classification society) and Maritime Services Division of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
  • Conducts drills with marine and non-marine crew as directed by the Master and as deemed necessary to maintain full compliance.
  • Assists and advise Shore Technicians as required.
  • Conducts routine inspections of the equipment relative with the ship and personal safety to be carried out at regular intervals.
  • Performs daily/weekly/monthly preventative maintenance as per maintenance schedule as instructed by Maintenance Manager
  • Performs all other duties and responsibilities normally expected of a vessel’s Engineer along with other important emergency machinery.
  • Must always maintain clear and proper communication with the Master and Maintenance Manager, especially in times of emergency.
  • Submit to and pass alcohol and drug tests as mandated by NIDCO including but not limited to pre-employment, random, reasonable suspicion and post- accident/incident testing.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • III/2 License, from an institution recognized by the Trinidad and Tobago Maritime Services Division
  • STCW 2010 Certificate, according to rank
  • A minimum of four (4) years’ experience as a Marine Engineer on-board high-speed crafts (HSC)
  • Specific training and experience in management of major on-board systems by type and brand or be available to be trained as may be required.
  • Strong electronics background; excellent care in marine industry, possess and demonstrate superior mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and other skills in engineering management of a large motor vessel.
  • Meet the specified medical requirements for fitness.
