MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN II

The incumbent is responsible for performing routine and specialized testing on fluids, tissues and other specimens in one or more areas of the laboratory including the blood bank, microbiology, biochemistry, histology, hematology, cytology and immunology.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified persons to fill the following position at the Arima General Hospital, North-Central Regional Health Authority (NCRHA):

MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN II

The incumbent is responsible for performing routine and specialized testing on fluids, tissues and other specimens in one or more areas of the laboratory including the blood bank, microbiology, biochemistry, histology, hematology, cytology and immunology.

 Main Responsibilities

• Assists in the supervision of all junior staff.
• Assists in the preparation of the internal roster.
• Assists in the delegation of work.
• Prepares, examines and analyzes all types of body fluids and tissues which aid in the diagnosis and management of patients.
• Assists in the maintenance of all laboratory equipments.
• Assists in the running of controls to ensure that the Department provides accurate results.
• Oversees the preparation of blood products (platelets, cryopicapitate, fresh and frozen plasma) and ensures that it is done in an acceptable timeframe.
• Assists in the training of junior staff, including COSTAATT interns and On-the-Job trainees.
• Assists in ensuring that there is an adequate supply of stocks required for the daily running of the Department.
• Ensures that junior staff follows basic health and safety procedures (wearing personal protective equipment).
• Assists in the writing of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
• Assists in the signing and dispatching of reports.
• Assists in providing statistical data at the end of the year.
• Assists in ensuring that the Department turnaround times are met.
• Assists in the evaluation of new reagents and procedures.

• Performs other relevant duties that may be assigned by senior officers.

 Minimum Qualification, Requirements and Experience:

• An Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology from an approved educational institution.
• Registration with the Medical Laboratory Technicians Board of Trinidad and Tobago.
• At least five (5) years experience gained in a recognized diagnostic medical laboratory.

          *Certificates acquired at foreign universities MUST be supported by certified transcripts as well as evidence that the completed programme is accredited in Trinidad and Tobago.*
