Information Commissioner - Bermuda

Salary PS 47 – $196, 286.95 per annum (=US$ Equivalent)

The Governor of Bermuda is seeking candidates for the role of Information Commissioner, as established by the Public Access to Information Act (PATI) 2010. This is an independent, statutory position, funded by the Government of Bermuda.

The Information Commissioner’s role is to promote Public Access to Information in accordance with the PATI Act. This involves raising public awareness of the rights conferred by the Act, working with Public Authorities to ensure that they understand their obligations under the Act, and ruling on disputes over the release of information. The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) employs a small team of investigators and officers who manage the day-to-day work of assessing appeals and advising on the proper application of the PATI Act.

The appointee will be the face of the ICO and will need to establish a public profile to explain decisions, raise awareness of the rights and obligations created by the act and provide information to the public. In addition, the job holder will be required to build appropriate working relationships with senior public officials to help continuously improve the quality of decision making, encourage compromise and resolve disagreements and conflicts.

The successful candidate will therefore demonstrate commitment to integrity in public office, excellent judgement under pressure, and strong and sensitive leadership.

Essential Requirements:

A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Law, Public Administration or other relevant subject, at least ten years management experience including five years in a senior level position.

Proven ability to make robust decisions under pressure and apply judgement in a regulated or legal framework with the resilience and determination to defend decisions under public scrutiny.

A clear professional commitment to public transparency and accountability.

Demonstrable experience in conflict resolution, mediation and/or negotiation.

Experience in, and excellence at public communication.

Desirable skills and experience:

Public speaking and delivering effective communication or educational campaigns.

Legal or administrative experience

Working knowledge of the Government of Bermuda and its agencies.

The appointee will become a public officer of Bermuda, and the appointment is initially for a five year period, with the possibility of a subsequent re appointment of another five years.

Interested applicants should apply in writing, with a CV of no more than two sides and a covering letter of no more than 1200 words, setting out your skills, experience and qualifications, and how you meet the criteria set out above.

These should be submitted and clearly marked as applications for the role of Information Commissioner.

The closing date for applications is 31st October 2024.
